How thick are these? would they provide good padding for walking around in boots?

In my opinion quit thick. I walked more 200 km, solid rock terrain, no problem with feet. I used La Sportiva TX4 boots.

Turn all socks inside out for washing. The oils and sweat from your feet will mat the inside of your socks. Turning them inside out before tossing them in the washer will help restore their loft.
