Good looking watch--I like the version with the gold trim--but I'm still having a hard time getting behind the Orient brand. I know they're good quality watches (owned by Seiko and all), but that coat of arms logo kind of kills it for me--although I do appreciate their naming the model line after me! That may help to change my mind at some point. Also, couldn't help noticing the drop copy omitted reference to the little 0-40 indicator on the dial. Guessing it's there to display the level of charge in the movement's battery? Every automatic should have that feature ;- )

RayFI feel the same about the brand. I just can't get excited about it, and for the same reasons you stated.

RayFThe 0-40 indicator you mentioned is the power reserve for the spring; there is no battery in an automatic watch (unless it is a Seiko Spring Drive). Orient has a long history, dating back to the 1950’s or more, and they have always made mechanical movements in-house. I have a first-generation Ray, and it is a great watch. Only thing I’m usually underwhelmed about is their bracelet; unless you are buying the Pro Saturation Diver, it typically isn’t a great bracelet, but it works.

RayFeh, power reserve is kind of useless. if you wear an auto it is always pegged at 40 anyway, and if youare wearing it, it will be winding as well, so it isnt like your driving and looking at a gas gauge giving you meaningful info. the best power reserves are on movement side and for hand wind watches and/or watches with significant reserves (days). 40 hrs on front, just dial clutter.

Erik1So true--definitely not helping it in the looks department, particularly with that logo. Bit of a mess really.

RayFHello Ray, a bit of corpo blah blah blah but maybe it's gonna change your approach to the brand 😉: "We want to be a company the nearest to the customer. The left lion in our company's facing-lions symbol mark represents our company, and the right lion represents our dealers and partners. The crown in the center represents our customers. This symbol was born from the idea of providing quality products for the benefit of our valued customers, while building a strong partnership by combining the efforts of the manufacturers, shops, and the partner companies that produce the watches. Our management policy also shares this same approach."

ElkyI appreciate the spirit of that sentiment more than I do its physical representation ;- ) It's not horrible, just a tad in-your-face.

Lord knows there are worse!

RayFPutting the logo aside it is a good deal. I also find the gold trim version the best (which is odd as I'm a blue dial sucker). I don't mind the reserve gauge, but the place is wrong (should be somewhere at 6 or 7 i/o company name). Call me oldfashioned.

RayFNo battery in the watch, the power meter is telling you how much wind is left in the watch's main spring.
