These should be perfect to send the boy to summer camp- if they make it back I will put them to use - anyone use the large for a sleeping bag?

Depending on the rating and fill of the sleeping bag I think you'll be looking at a 10 liter stuff sack at least. So these will be too small.

Guessing that since the sleeping bag is for a child it's synthetic fill, I would go with a 9-13 liter sack for a 40* rated bag and 16-20 liters for a 20* bag.
