I love the sawyer filters, but the squeeze bags make me nervous. Too many fails.

Sueb2bWhy is there ANY discussion about "squeeze"? I know Sawyer makes a popular squeeze system, but this is a gravity system, no? I presume its the same filter? Maybe not, but regardless they make good filters, though you have to keep them from freezing. Platypus and Evernew bladder bottles I presume still fit for filling, but you're typically not going to have a gallon one of those. I would think its for filling multiple bottles/bladders with a hose attachment for filling any bottle.

scopeI was just about to say that. This is not a squeeze system, it’s a gravity system. Two different products.

scopeI know it’s the gravity system, but the bag material looks the same as the squeeze. Too many failures on that material using a squeeze for me to try this system.
I believe i mentioned i one’d I love the sawyer filters. I’ll stick w/my heavier version of the sawyer gravity.

Sueb2bYep, bag material looks the same. I also think your worry is irrelevant in regards to a gravity product. I don't think the bags are that bad, I do think they've sometimes failed under the pressure of squeeze and user error. Not for me, but for others I know. I didn't care for the squeeze, too much effort for me and maybe I just didn't make it fail. Otherwise, I just don't believe there is anything "bad" about these bags that should cause concern.

Sueb2bAgreed, shouldn't be much concern over bag strength for a gravity application, but yes, they appear to have a fairly high failure rate with this 1 gallon bag as they do with the pouches. If the flow rate isn't to your liking, it would seem that replacing that too-short tubing with a longer length (or two pieces above and below the filter that together are longer in total length) would speed it up. This creates head pressure and speeds up normal in-line filters that are DIY rigged into gravity systems very nicely. The mini still flows a bit slower but you can get it at its max flow rate and try to keep it there by proper maintenance (back flushing and demineralizing when needed).

ChilltownVinegar solution. I do maybe 50%, just run a pint through and let it sit for several hours/overnight, followed by thorough back flushing with clean water.
