how does the canister for gas work. Do you refill it or buy new canister and what kind of gas to use.

JesireeThis uses a disposable butane/isobutane canisters. You can use any brand MSR, Snow Peak, Jetboil, or Soto in 4, 8, or 16 oz canisters. See https://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com/2012/01/gas-canisters-101.html
Butane stops boiling at 40*F so Isobutane is preferred for cold weather camping (boiling point of 10*F). Most brands use a propane mix.

GuyInIowaWell, actually butane's boiling point is 30 F, isobutane's is 11 F, and propane's is -44 F, but you've absolutely got the right idea. Butane is to be avoided in cold weather, and an isobutane/propane mix is to be preferred.
