Jssaylor2007Something is definitely suspect there. Are there the maker's mark notches in the liner? Also maybe check to make sure the cut out in the g10 for the compression lock is oblong and not symmetrical.
Here's my cruwear for comparison
Jssaylor2007I've got the S110V in blurple and mine looks like the two on the bottom. How's the action of the compression lock? I had a clone and the clearly noticeable difference was the scratchiness of the lock.
ZiglafWell I've posted on Bladeforums, and might follow up at Spyderco. If this turns out to be fake I'll be pretty much done buying much from Massdrop.
Jssaylor2007I just went looking around, and all the pictures of the Dark Earth G10/S35VN combo appear to be slightly "off-center" at BladeHQ, Cutleryshoppe. The only place that had a picture that had a "centered hole" was at Knife Center.
I do know that this is essentially a sprint-run knife, so I am wondering if there were slight differences in each sprint.
Spydiewiki lists this version as the 3rd sprint run.
Jssaylor2007Spyderco has multiple versions of the Para Military 2, some of which have minor variations in blade length, grind, and position of the Spydy Hole.
For example, compare the position of the Spydy hole on the PM2 G-10 Black (https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C81G2/Para-Military-2-G-10-Black/472) with the position of the hole on the PM2 G-10 Dark Blue (https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C81GDBL2/Para-Military-2-G-10-Dark-Blue-CPM-S110V/947) and you will see similar differences to the knives in your picture above. Also, if you read the description of the PM2 G-10 Camo (https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C81GCMO2/Para-Military-2-G-10-Camo/626), they describe some of the changes specific to that model:
"We kept the same high-performance CPM S30V full flat-ground blade but made its profile thinner; removing angles that could catch on a pocket or clothing during deployment. We also lengthened the blade's tip and added additional surface jimping to both the spine and finger choil. Implementation of a new Bushing Pivot System generates fluid action and more consistent manufacturing tolerances. Refinements to overall construction may not be drastic or even visible to the eye but from the G-10 textured handle to the CPM S30V steel full flat blade, everything is sharper, smoother and guaranteed to provide performance and user comfort. "
It's difficult to tell whether you received a counterfeit without being able to handle the knife, however, if the build quality and blade sharpness appear to be as advertised, I would not think you received a counterfeit based solely on the design discrepancies.
Jssaylor2007Yep, mine looks like your top one and not like the photos of the drop which look more similar to your bottom two.
FWIW, the supplier of this drop appears to be Moteng NA, out of Fenton, MO.
Jssaylor2007I see what you're referring to, @griff609 notes correctly that the hole is in the same spot, but the grind line is higher (ends closer to the thumb ramp).
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Spyderco is pretty consistent but they do make changes between production runs, and I do know that PM2 production was expanded to a second factory line to keep up with demand, so it's possible the difference in grind line is due to this batch coming off the new line.
I'm happy to inquire about this with our vendor and our Spyderco factory representative. Once we know if everyone was affected or just a select number of people, and whether it's a factory defect or just how the whole batch was done this time, we'll update the group.
To be clear: as part of Massdrop's "Community First" guiding philosophy, we do not, and will not, ever purchase counterfeit goods - doing so would be a disservice to members and makers, both of whom we have the greatest respect for. There are certain brands that closely resemble Spyderco's designs that you will never see here for this reason; I walked straight past their booth at Blade Show for this exact reason.
JonasHeinemanLook forward to hearing about what comes of your inquiry. I'm hoping the entire batch isn't affected, and look forward to more information/detail on the matter.
OE800The factory seconds have a notch on the top of the blade near the jimping...Nick Shabazz just did a video on the notch on factory seconds...(how to spot a factory second)
FWIW, I got this version from an authorized dealer a few months back....Mine looks like the bottom two in Jssaylor2007 picture.
Jssaylor2007Spyderco has changed the grind on the 2017 PM2 models. They used the rest of the blades with the grind basically in the center of the Spydie hole then are using the offset grind now. They will be using these from now on. These are 100% legit Spyderco's.
Jay2984Yep, you are correct. I was about to post the same response, but you beat me to it. That is a 100% legit knife. The grind is no longer a way of spotting fakes. Going to have to have a keen eye from here forward, but this knife is not one that anyone should be concerned about.
Jssaylor2007Looks like the middle knife is fake looking at the screws on the clip the aleat to have that flat part on the side of the screw instead of tapering evenly to the base of the screw. just an observation.
JamesXYour blade looks pretty dirty and already a scratch on it for something that arrived that way.
I'm wondering if it's due to shipping and/or customs rather than massdrop, as that's something they can't control. I mean I've seen bad knives, but that looks straight up unbelievable in how damaged it looks.
Also, massdrop recycles their pages. Is that from the Sprint Run, or their normal Para Military 2 drop?
