I've been seeing spyderco blades on massdrop for a while, all as seemingly high prices, what is it that sets these knives apart, is spyderco just a big name in the knife world, or do they make really good products?
johnny304I've been carrying a PM2 for over a year now. The knife has held up very well. I also own a Ladybug, Dragonfly, Stainless Military, and Pingo. They are all great quality knives at their price points. The prices may seem high but compared to other knives in their range of quality, they are fair and sometimes even cheaper. The PM2 and others in the Military line would be known as a mid-range knife. Great quality and value.
johnny304Spyderco is a reputable name when it comes to mass market knives. Their pm2 has become a favorite and staple within the knife community, with an almost cult like following. So part of the cost is due to the brand, but also due to high quality materials and craftmanship. Blade steels have come a long way in the last few decades, with the introduction of various super steels for enhanced corrosion resistance, hardness, edge retention, etc. So that adds to the cost as well as use of different high quality handle materials. However, spyderco does also have some more budget friendly models. But there's a huge difference in quality between a $30 knife with 8crmov Chinese steel to a $120 knife with s30v/s35vn/xhp/etc steel. imo at least, and from there on up a lot of the cost to benefit is much lower and based more on preference. Just be careful, once the spyderco bug bites it becomes quite a slippery slope lol
johnny304Spyderco is one of the best companies out there. Their quality is top notch and they pretty much allways use steels at a price point that no other offer (85$ for a uk pen knife in S110V!). So 125$ for a proven blade with great ergonomics, great slicing ability is a damn good price i think.
johnny304Have a PM2 as my EDC and I like it.
Spyderco, like many companies, have their good and bad and different places of manufacture (different levels of quality). So if this matters to you... this one should have been in the Colorado, USA versus China.
kenichiwaYes I'm hooked, I have to admit I became an addict pretty soon. ;-)
As for now I have several Spyderco's: Tenacious black/black | Caspian H1 | Dragonfly 2 Tattoo, H1, VG10, ZDP-189 | Paramilitary 2 digicam/satin & black/black S30V, S110V, S35VN, CF 52100 | Para 3 Cru-Wear | Native 5 FRN S110V, KC exclusive G10 S90V | Military digicam/black S30V | Delica 4 fully serrated VG-10 | Manix 2 BHQ natural G10/M4.
My favourite EDC combo: a Paramilitary 2 and a Dragonfly 2 (last one is setup for left-handed carry).
Wow, it looks like I really have a problem ;-)
KaozerThe exact moment I accepted it, I don't remember but should be when I purchased my third PM2.
Denial isn't possible anymore... just a bunch Spydies I have lying around ;-)
KaozerThanks :-)
Hmmm, she doesn't take it anymore. Haha.
She left me a couple of months ago, but it had nothing to do with my Spydie love.
Normally when I was 'playing' with a knife, when watching tv on the couch, she looked at me as if she wanted to stab the knife somewhere not pleasant ;-)
Benslen15Those buck knives.. I used to have a few of those.. Buck makes great products. Their blades never ever ever rust. But they do eventually dull out after years of ownership.
Dr.OetqerLooks like you like the Dragonfly. How's the H1? I was thinking about picking up that exact blade. Might have to pick up at least some sort of Dragonfly along with the wharncliffe Delica I've been eyeing.
