Not to be a hater, but I'm a bigger fan of https://www.massdrop.com/buy/countycomm-pocket-grappling-hook grappling hook than the one shown here. Particularly the micro, which I feel is not just pocketable, but key-chainable.
As for their use, I like to think of them as I would car/home/health/life insurance. As long as I have it, I'll never need it. However, let an opportunity to buy a $23 pocket grappling hook pass me buy, and I'm tempting fate in ways no sane man would.
