Does it sound as 1-dimensional and soulless as other Topping gear? Or have they gotten any better?

I am currently using this as a pre with revealing Martin Logan speakers and a R2R DAC, with Hypex NC400 amps. It's by far the best pre I have ever had in my system. It's just transparent. If you want color or bias imposed on the sound, this isn't it. If you want the fabled "straight line with gain" this is what you want.
I'm in for an EXT90 to extend mine, and I'm considering a second combo.

Yes it will and vice versa. It does so without shortcuts, the output is truly balanced.
That is how I'm currently using mine; my preferred DAC is single ended and the Hypex NC400 amps are balanced only. Works fantastic.
