HD800 is still a flagship from sennheiser. They won't do a Massdrop version because it would damage the sennheiser image. That's the main reason the price does not drop even though 7 years have passed. In fact it has even increased price.
JuananExactly. That's why I feel HD700, instead, is in prime position to get the Massdrop treatment. A few tweaks to improve the original, Sennheiser can still sell it at slightly above the 6XX price point, theoretically everyone wins.
VinceTheStampede624I imagine that MD and Sennheiser Tullamore in particular must be quite fond of each other given how successful the HD6xx and HD58x have been for everyone. The 700 is arguably still the flagship Irish Senn (660s is comparable price), and they could sure benefit from some damping for the resonance. . . MD Senn 7xx please! :)
GiantHeadphoneSquidI just got an HD 700 (plus Dekoni pads, they really help!) but I would also like to see a Massdrop edition! My HD 800 was made in Germany, they make the HD 800, HD 800 S, HD 820, and HE-1 Orpheus at Sennheiser Headquarters with their own tooling machines to get their super high tolerances. I got to visit and take a tour, the place looks like a combination of a high school (complete with hallway lockers, cafeteria, trophy case with a history of Sennheiser production, lobby/common areas, and “egg carton” offices), science lab (especially the basement), and farm. Haven’t seen the Ireland facilities but I think that’s where Linus Tech Tips went, looks cool! Original Sennheiser building/farm where the company started:

Looking a bit to the right, there’s some more gray and blue offices in the back. A couple buildings like a college campus, some connected by aboveground hallways. Call me weird, but I like the brick streets and flagstones, I think it’s cool that not everything is concrete and asphalt:

EvshrugThank you so much for sharing these pictures and your experiences! Sennheiser have such an important history for headphones and audio electronics, what a treat to be able to tour their German site. I was able to visit the Bose HQ here in the US several years ago, and that 'high school/ campus science lab' feel you describe would be very accurate in many ways for them as well. I don't think they are on the original site (I don't know for sure tbh), however. . . It is very special that Senn has kept the original farm :)
GiantHeadphoneSquidCool to hear that the people trying to make fun music entertainment products for us aren’t super industrial at heart!

JuananWell technically they have the HD820S as the flagship, and the "Only for fools with too much money", the HE1. That said, Sennheiser has left a huge price gap in their product lines. The HD660S is at the $500 msrp price point and the step up from there is $1500. Makes no sense. I hope it doesn't have anything to do with them being bought 6 months ago.
AndrewLBNo, the HD 800S is the dynamic flagship, the HD 820 is more expensive but the open back still provides a touch more fidelity (The HD 820 provides an option for when a high end closed back design is desired). There is currently no HD 820S model. Yes, the HD 700 was discontinued and I feel the HD 660S provides a better value. Also, the IE 900 and IE 800S are currently priced between the HD 800S and HD 660S. Sennheiser has four divisions, Consumer isn’t the largest. A deal was made to acquire it last spring, but actually hasn’t closed yet, and even when it does Sonova was purchasing it with staff intact so the Consumer division could keep right on developing products with the current staff, most of which have been around for a long time defining Sennheiser headphones. You may be posting on several old threads, but Sennheiser and their Consumer division did not “end” last spring in the deal with Sonova. The IE 900 was not their last headphone, you’ll see when they release their next product.
