In order to make suggestions I need to clarify how you are using the phones and in what environment at the least.
  • Are you using them outdoors or indoors? Outdoors is challenging for additional reasons than just power.
  • Are you opposed to an additional amplifier rather than replacing the player? A new player if the existing is awesome otherwise may not be a needed expense. There are many options to amplify in addition to the player that may make you happy.
Personally I use the 6XX only from home and when I'm home I drive them with anything except my iBasso DX80. Not that it cannot drive them, but it's a far less enriching experience than almost any desktop amplification. That said, my iFI micro iDSD BL has been a great pair and is technically portable, so there's that as an option to add to your existing player. Let me know your thoughts.

thetoolmandar Thank you for your thoughts. I purchased the headphones as I thought it was good deal. When I received them, I noticed the difference in weight between the AKG 550K (that I had been using) and the Sennheiser/Massdrop headphones with the latter being noticably lighter than the former. I've owned my current player for two or three years. It's a Sony NWZ-A17. I've been looking at different players but it's hard to know what to buy as not all information, e.g. Impedance, is available. The system would be used indoors. My budget for a new player is between $300.00 and $400.00. Thank you.

rick58I suggest that with a budget of 400 or less you look at amplification of the existing signal (i.e. keep your player). I do not know of a player that will easily power the 6XX that is within or near your budget.

thetoolmandarThank you for your help. I've spent the last few days reading up on amplifiers and dacs. I'm just going to take my time and see what I can come up with. I'll be sure to post again. Thanks again. Rick
