ChenosThe MD THX amp paired with the MD Airist R-2R DAC,if it lives up to expectations when it finally debuts in May, will become a real performance/price duo. That is, if you look, need, want , desire or just get possessed to make a move, cause I know the force is strong here... Meantime Tidal is the best quality for streaming, Audivarna technically looks to be the best player at a decent price (still for now), and build up your fav library, at least up to the level of the Fulla @ 24/96.

rastusThanks! Actually my rig is quite new. Have the 58X for about 6 weeks and got the Fulla from a fellow audio enthusiast as used for 250NIS (about 65$) just a month ago. Happy with the sound quality so far. Sad that I can only benefit from it while sitting on my desk though :) And Tidal for sure. I've always upgraded to Hifi and rolled back to premium, but since I've got these two I'm permanently subscribed to Tidal Hifi looking for good recorded masters.

ChenosNo, it only gets better. I have since gotten into vinyl which is awesome, and I just put together a portable rig that sounds better than my 6xx. Certainly better than a real gateway drug, and probably cheaper too.

Owen-paLooking to make myself a portable build similar to 58x or 6xx, could you recommend something?

Dj1nnDo you mean similar in sound quality and characteristics, or are you looking for a portable amp to power one of those headphones?

Owen-paThanks for responding! I'm looking for similar sound characteristics to them. I really like their signature but don't want to bother people with open backs when I'm at a library for example which is quite frequent as a student. I don't think I need a new dac/amp for now as I'm using a v20 for most of my listening outside of home.

Dj1nnI am big into IEMs, so I’d be happy to give some recommendations. If you are looking to go cheap, I recommend both the nuforce EDC and EDC3. I’ve had both and they are both killer IEMs for their price. The EDC are wider and bassier than the 3, so if you are looking for a more neutral sound, go with the 3, but if not the EDC is a great affordable option. If you are looking to spend a similar amount as the hd6xx, I would try the Campfire Comet. They get great reviews and many say they have an even frequency response with strong bass, which is pretty much the same response as the 6xx. These also come with a microphone which might be useful if you are using it with a phone. I am hard pressed to come up with any great closed back headphones for you since most of them tend to be ultra neutral, boring studio monitors, or just protable headphones that don’t really have the same kind of audiophile level sound quality that the sennheisers have. Maybe check out the Audio Technica m40x if you are looking to go this route. That being said, I don’t think you can beat IEMs for discrete protable listening, and I think there are many more fantastic options around the price of the hd6xx. Hope I helped a little bit, good luck in finding something that you love.

Owen-paThank you very much for your advice! After all the research I’ve done I'm getting to pretty much the same conclusions regarding closed back headphones. The only one that seems to tick all the boxes for me being the meze 99 classics upwards of 300 bucks (way too expensive for me right now for a pair of headphones). Regarding IEMs, however, I don't know as much and I'll look into the campfire and nuforce ones. I currently own a pair of FH1's that I like for a lot of things but find quite inaccurate for some instruments/songs. My only comparison in terms of iems is my past pair of sennheiser cx 300 ii that I previously owned but had a shitty cable that broke really fast. Do you know how any of these compare to the ones you recommended? Thanks again

Dj1nnThey got a bad rap, bass boost... but were built for a tough life and reviews said they retain the senn sq, deals on the bay etc: https://audioholikz.com/2017/11/14/sennheiser-hd-630vb-review/

Dj1nnI know for sure that the nuforce are really well built, and they come with two cables so, you can pick the one you like best. Campfire is renowned for their build quality so you can’t go wrong there. I agree that the meze99s would be a great option, though I am not sure they will be as neutral as the 6XX. You might be able to find them used or be able to shop around for a deal if you are really interested. Massdrop also recently did a collab with Meze on them, so you can request them, but I don’t know if they will be back. I think you are in the same boat as I am, in that if sennheiser made a closed by variant of their hd6 line I would buy it in a heartbeat, but sadly I don’t there is anything that can quite rival the value and performance of the hd6XX and 58X. Honestly, if you are really interested in their sound, you might want to just go ahead and get one of them, and buy a cheap set of IEMs to use on the go. That is what I did initially, I got the hd6XX, and while I waited 4 months for them to show up, I bought a small amp and the EDC. I bet you could get away with the 58X Jubilee on the lg v20, and you could pick up something cheap to use on the go. I promise you will be thoroughly blown away by the sennheisers even if you can only use them at home.
