Great article for people that are just coming into the community and would like to understand the characteristics of different headphone types. Its surprising how little straightforward information exists online about these kinds of topics, so I applaud this kind of content and looking forward to seeing more. Some suggested topics; balanced vs single ended amp output, dynamic driver vs planar vs electrostatic, explanation of different specs for headphones and audio equipment.
LuckyLuke575There is a similar Drop initiated post about balanced gear here https://drop.com/talk/3502/ongoing-balanced-audio-gear There is also one for some aspects of headphone specs here in this headphone review article: https://drop.com/talk/236/understanding-headphone-reviews

LuckyLuke575Is electrostatic superior than planar and dynamics ?
nick_tWhen it comes to various driver styles its hard to say one is universally better than the others. E-stats have incredibly quick diaphragm response so they can prevent advantages. Dynamics tend to move much more air (greater excursion) than planar or e stats so they can be preferential to some folks. I find myself a bit of a planar fan as I like their bass extension without excessive peaks in the mid or upper bass and the typically linear midrange. They are also generally cheaper than e-stats and can be used with more of my existing gear. I would take a Susvara with my existing Cayin amp over a 6K set of sr009/007 with an estat amp

nick_tI auditioned Sennheiser HD 820, HD 800, Hifiman HE 1000, and Grado 2000e Pro Series, and Stax L300 in one sitting, and I can tell you that the Stax (being electrostatic) was in a different league compared to all the top end models of the other brands. Incomparable in terms of how live, strong and full the sound was. If I ever change from my HD 6XXs (very unlikely) the only headphones I'd ever buy are electrostatic headphones. I wouldn't waste my time with anything else.

LuckyLuke575Stax L300 is already in the other league in your opinion meaning to have not heard others. To me, electrostatic is just another pair of great headphone with its own signature and characteristic of the driver sound, period. Each driver has its own unique sounding to each own. As for me, I go for specific sound am after and which one sound the best.

ElectronicVicesActually there is only problem is $$$. Also, while its a definite truth to your saying that each sound of the driver have its own benefits and acoustic strength of its sound properties. Its definitely true that hard to say one is universally better than the others when only when you compare sound signature. Its one reason this hobby exits among audiophile as there is no better, depends how individual look at it. However, regardless taste of sound and preference, there is one universal sound and its so happen to nuetral, no coloration. As such there is a reason, Orpheus exists with incredibly quick diaphragm response and super detailed, less lazy but speedy driver of an electrostatic while a nice texture of warmth and dynamic bass of their hybrid tube as well as reference class nuetral. Put together to you get a world class sounding over $50,000 headphone system.
