Why does expresso coffee/drinks taste so different from regular coffee? I seem to enjoy expresso based drinks significantly more.

eehcnayrHi eehcnayr! Espresso is typically produced through a machine which extracts the coffee using a high level of pressure (9 bars to be precise.) There are a couple factors that lend to its flavor. 1 being that espresso is ground much much finer than a typical cup of coffee. The higher surface area on the ground coffee (combined with pressure) results in a much more intense extraction. Another factor is the strength. A cup of drip coffee typically has a ratio of about 1 part coffee and 15-16 parts water, where as espresso is much more concentrated, being around the 1:1-3 range.
While you need a machine to pull a proper shot of espresso there are similar (and much, much less expensive) methods you can use to get a similar result such as stove top espresso makers, or the Aeropress.

FancyRedFoxThanks for the answer. Very informative and concise. I have an Aeropress (which works well), but now you got me thinking I should invest in a better grinder!

eehcnayrThe stove top (moka pot) is similar but doesn't actually make a cup of espresso. Not quite enough pressure to extract and emulsify the volatile oils which is apparent by the lack of crema. Still a terrific cup of coffee though. Just beware to avoid burning it.

eehcnayrPlease don't spell it with an X.
The grinder is certainly very important.
