I love coffee, however I want to try making propper lattés at home. What is the best way to get a good foam on tope of the coffee itself and generally to make a good latte?

ICMonsterPick up a milk frother (Ikea or amazon will have cheap ones ~$5), heat up your milk in a microwave and use the frother to introduce air into your warm milk. Pour it into coffee/espresso and you're good to go.

ICMonsterIt takes practice and a machine with good steaming capability. There milk frothing devices out there but they're not going to make proper microfoam for a latte.
Be aware that you're going to have to have both a good espresso machine and grinder to make lattes at home. The grinder is very important and many have a tendency to overlook it or leave it as an afterthought while obsessing over which espresso machine to buy.

ICMonsterI use the Hario milk frother. Sure, it is not a cheap one but it works very well and I noticed it does not decrease in intensity when the batteries are getting low like cheaper versions do. I heat up the milk first in the glass pitcher that comes with it and then I use the frother.

ICMonsterJust to add, milk frothing wands, or milk frothers that whip and heat the milk up will produce frothy milk, however it is not going to produce the same type of true steamed milk you get from a proper espresso machine or dedicated milk steamer. I've tried a plethora of these devices trying to get something close to what I can produce on my home espresso machine to no avail. It really comes down to what you are going for. If you just wanted foam/frothy warm or hot milk, these devices will work. If you want smooth, silky steamed milk that tastes good, I personally wouldn't bother. Give it a try for yourself...order up a latte at a local coffee shop (not Starbucks!) then try out the devices and note the difference in taste.
The only device I found that would produce acceptable results was the electronic heated Bellman espresso maker/milk steamer. The stovetop heated version of these can be found easier, but either way, it was still a lot of fuss to make one drink.
