I live in Adelaide South Australia and I’ve been quilting since I retired in 99. I started going to a group but that got too bitchy, have tried two others since then with the same results. So I have joined groups on Facebook which ive a lot more helpful and no back stabbing. I have machine quilted some of my quilts on my domestic machine and loved it but about 8 - 10 years or so ago I tried hand quilting and piecing and fell in love. I also now incorporate embroidery into my quilts. Our quilt designers here in OZ are fantastic and they cover most styles. We have one lady Sue Daley who does the EPP English paper piecing and designs some beautiful quilts.

MargaretLeeI've thought about giving hand quilting a try! Do you have a favorite thread you use and what weight thread do you prefer?

icwilsonI learned to quilt about 20 years ago by hand-piecing and hand-quilting. Although I now machine piece a lot also, hand-piecing is my favorite. I have made numerous quilts completely by hand. I mostly use Coats and Clark all-purpose thread to piece and then quilt with quilting thread. Some people recommend only using cotton thread. I am still using the first quilt I sewed and it has held up well with many washings.

icwilsonI use a regular cotton thread, sometimes one labeled 'quilting' thread. I also use perl cotton and embroidery floss when I want the quilting to stand out.
