"With a new resonator system and driver materials" Can someone please clarify this? Are the new driver materials an improvement or a cost-cutting measure? Cheers, J

It’s not a cost cutting measure, rather it’s a very sophisticated retuning with the goal of a warmer sound signature. It still uses a ring radiator (driver) and enclosure of the same quality as the HD 800S. Some of it is “secret sauce” that Sennheiser isn’t going to share with competitors, but costs weren’t cut on the headphone production. Edit: I was incorrect about some of the methods used to retune the headphone.

They're definitely not a cost-cutting measure but the result of long RND to favourably affect their acoustical properties.

edahlThanks for the response. If you're able, would you care to elaborate on the key differences in materials and their reasons for changing?

xoncm6The 800/S has been criticised for a lack of energy in the upper mids/lower treble. Changes in the materials in the transducer is a way to achieve a change in those frequencies. What those material changes specifically are, I wouldn't know I'm afraid.
