The future of the Watch Community

more_vert
Hello everyone,    You may have noticed some changes to our site over the last few months that emphasize the Audiophile and Mechanical Keyboards Communities. We have seen tremendous growth in these Communities, and after much deliberation we have made the decision to focus our resources on these two Communities exclusively.   Over the last few years we have built a strong following and portfolio of products in the Watches Community. However, in order to narrow our focus we will be sunsetting Watches on Drop.com, effective March 23rd. Any Watches-related product runs you’ve joined won’t be affected, and you’ll still see a few runs in our More Community Picks section.    We understand this is a big shift, and we want to thank everyone for their contributions and support over the years.   Thank you, Drop

The polite thing to do when disappointing people and taking something from them that you encouraged them to take ownership and membership in is to apologize. "We understand this is a big shift and thanks" is not an apology. This post reads like an autopsy report. I don't wish anything bad on you guys, but you should treat people better. Or go somewhere that doesn't involve working with humans and pesky things like empathy or compassion. Maybe day trading. For me, I'm in the market for some headphones and a watch. Guess where I WON'T be shopping for headphones?

I'm a little late to this party (or dumpster fire, I guess). I don't buy watches. I hate having things on my wrist, maybe it's because I use my hands in range of motion tasks that require them to be on flat surfaces. I don't know. It's kind of silly. It's also kind of silly closing down the unique parts of your offerings. It's been consistent for years. There's plenty of things I joined Massdrop for, that were shut down by the time I had the means to procure them. The fashion, cooking, photography and tech sections have all gone away. It's frustrating, because while I joined Massdrop for the audiophile section, I was always interested in purchasing from some of the other areas of the site. So I guess my point is that cutting the fat makes sense, but what brought most of us here was the community and the unique offerings. Now you're down to audio, which is somewhat lucrative, and keyboards (which can be some of the most elitist, gatekeeping bullshit I've ever seen, and I come from audio communities). I agree with a lot of people that there's a fair chance the site will fold soon, but I do believe the model has been untenable for a while now. Reducing your portfolio won't change that...

Did you get ANY responses in favor of this blunder? Submitted in a support ticket (SMH) to close and delete my account and all personal information on the site. Good luck with the bankruptcy.

Well I've been gone from this site for quite some time and came back to this announcement... So weird. Keyboards and headphones... Smh.

It's because the mark up on, as someone else said, a weird and annoying barrage of fetishized plastic is so large that it's not worth it to keep around something the community actually wants... isn't it? I never did pick up my HD6xx... and I'm not certain I even care enough too any longer.

They have a "store" on Amazon where they seem to be selling what remains of their other other stuff. No idea how long that will stay up, or if that's what "Drop" will evolve (de-evolve) to. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/DROP/page/744E1DB1-1F3C-4643-93A4-D416480E3004?ref_=ast_bln

I've been a member here for a long time and the community helped jumpstart my interest in watches. My first mechanical piece was the Seiko Sarb 035 (purchased from here) that I grew to adore. Then I won an Orient Bambino on give away here. It lead to a lot of watches and a hobby I took joy in. I always imagined I'd purchase an Orient Defender from here but alas it was not mean to be. If this is the end, it's been a fun ride. Thanks for everything and good luck!

SpiritOneYou're so lucky to have been able to purchase a SARB035 from here! When I joined, those offerings were no more... :(

BALLS in your JAWS. Bad decision

This may be one of the most short-sighted decisions imaginable. It is rare that I don't have a watch on order or at least one on the way. Have they all been future heirlooms? Nope. Some could be. Others not so much. And a turkey or two just to balance things out. Not sure that I even want to figure how much I've spent here over the last few years. (More than I thought at first. I somehow had two different accounts going for a while.) Can you make a go of it on just headphones and keyboards? You must believe that you can. I wish you well. But someplace off in the distance there is somebody willing to step in and maintain the watch element of this fellowship. As soon as that happens I will aim that way. Nothing of interest left here for me or my money any longer, it seems. I bid you farewell.
