I can't speak for Brother but I can say that large manufacturers do make a cheaper versions of their products for sale specifically in big box stores. They do it to meet the price points required to get on the shelves. The higher quality priced stuff is sold at a higher price (appropriately) via industry dealers. A great box that touches on this is Big Box Swindle by Stacey Mitchell.
