These don't sound like DT880s
The Beyerdynamic DT880 has long had a reputation as a neutral and clear headphone, with excellent detail and soundstage. So that's what I was kinda expecting.
Unfortunately these Drop editions seem to have been tuned to be more bassy, so they don't much sound like DT880s anymore. Imagine a DT990 without the shrill top end, and that's closer to what these sound like to me. Consequently, they have more boomy midbass, less detail and poorer resolution than the other pair of DT880s I own.
I don't necessarily dislike them. They are good if you enjoy a slightly bassier sound signature, which many people do. But they don't really stand out from the many other boomy consumer headphones out there.
So why market them as DT880s?

asgilbIt's most likely due to the ear pad on this limited version. While I have not heard this 880, I can say that I have the DT990 pro original and recently bought the DT990 limited edition black version expecting the same sound signature with just a different color. I was unexpectedly surprised to find how different they sound to the original. The ear pads are denser which consequently make them less comfortable than the original. The sound signature increases the mid bass region and tames the hot treble the 990's are known for. The sound stage also looses some of the vastness the 990's are capable of yet maintains precise and slightly improved imaging. I actually like the slight tuning difference but Beyerdynamic does not provide any details about this. I would hazard a guess that this is the same issue with these as they look very similar to the 990 special edition I have.

czrem990 imaging I wouldn’t call precise, it’s feels a bit off to me. dt990 imaging is worse than hd700 which has decent imaging I still wouldn’t call it precise though but close, and 990 has better imaging than k702 and dt880 and 6xx. But the treble is pretty rough to deal with. Dt990 and hd600 are somewhere in the same ballpark for imaging imo. Hd800 I would call precise.
