An additional $21.75 to ship to Australia. Is this an indication of how fragile the product is, that it needs very special attention to packaging to survive the journey?

TimbergetterShipping is very expensive. It's not a means of revenue or profit, it is a necessity. It can get very expensive, especially to ship outside of the country. You are welcome to check rates for yourself with USPS, Fed Ex, or UPS, it's not cheap.

DannyhammockCompletely right - but I think the upsetting aspect of this is only learning about the additional shipping cost when you go to purchase it. Not only that but I could easily see missing that cost entirely as it's mentioned nowhere on the product page - not even in the note.

tedI think that it's pretty standard among most online shopping sites that you don't learn how much shipping is until checkout. They need to know where it is shipping before they can give you a price for shipping as it varies quite a bit, especially when leaving the country.

DannyhammockI wouldn't say it's standard... Amazon, Ebay, and Walmart all disclose the total cost of the item before you checkout or add to cart. Even REI mentions it on the product page.
I'm a domestic customer so I can't speak to the experience of international customers or what they are seeing, but I was annoyed with trying to purchase a $14 item only to learn that is only 2/3 of the landed cost.

tedYes the total cost of the "item" is disclosed. But not the shipping. If it says free shipping sure, but if it doesn't say free shipping you can't assume shipping is free. Or unless they have flat rate shipping. But most sites, if they are charging shipping, need to know where it is shipping before they can tell you how much it is.
