With its backlit voltage meter, color-matched volume and selector switches, and exposed tubes, the Cayin MT-35MK2 Tube Integrated Bluetooth Amp is a beautiful desktop device, aesthetically speaking. However, it’s when you look under the hood that you really see why this thing sings Read More
What is the voltage for this amp? There is no option to select 110V vs. 220/240V. The image of the back of the amp seems to show 240V input. But it's not clear if this is an actual picture or just from their website.
GrebosaurusI believe the switch; TR and UL switches between Single Ended Triode and Ultra Linear [push pull). AM I right? Its one of the main reasons I'm thinking of this over the MT-12.
muykelly1Single ended means there is one output tube per channel, each of which is always on.
The tubes can be run in triode mode, or pentode mode. Pentode (aka ultralinear) mode has about 1/3 higher output per tube, but less of the euphonic 2nd harmonics than triode mode. Both configurations are single ended.
When you have 2pairs of output tubes, ur wattage output almost doubles, but at the expense of crossover distortion (each tube does half of the wave form).
This is NOT single ended, unless the amp has a switch which that disables one of each pair of output tubes to make it single ended
GrebosaurusSo there is a difference between 'single ended triode' mode (SET) and 'triode' mode? This amp does have a switch; TR<-->UL. Which i assumed meant you can switch it from running from push-pull or 'push. Here and on Cayin's website it says you can go from UL and 35 watts to TR for a much much more 'lush and rich sound w 18 watts.
muykelly1single ended means current and voltage is running continuously through the wave form. By definition it is therefore running in class A
by contrast, push/pull is most often class A/B or Class B (some rare designs can be class A), more power, less heat, better efficiency, but potentially inferior sound.
all these considerations apply to both triodes and pentodes (and any given other tube type)
UL can be single ended just as triode, but it will have more power and less distortion than triodes, but unfortunately also less “desirable” 2nd harmonic distortions
in ur case it seems the amp is a push/pull design (2 output tubes for each side), which can be switched back and forth between UL and triode, which is pretty standard for push/pull designs.
the difference in power is what I listed b4. UL has 1.5x to 2x the power of triode mode, but more desirable euphonic distortion profiles.
based on the power ratings ur desired amp probably uses KT 66 or KT 88 tubes (the numbers are roughly what maximum
wattage a push/pull set of these tubes generates in UL mode)
the difference to triode mode is variable, but 1/2 power sounds about right
if u want to go all SET, you could go to numerous single ended 300B true triode (no UL mode), but you will only get 6-8 watt per channel
best to get horn speakers klipsch is the go to
there are also some single ended KT 120 and KT 150 designs, but they get quite costly; mind you, Cayin might have an “affordable”
GrebosaurusThanks Greb. I'll read that a few times to digest. To distill quickly: Triode mode will have less power but more "desirable" 2nd order harmonics yet still less of them than a SET 300B design.
I have a pair of Klipsch Forte 1's which I have updated/Improved the crossover components of. Which I think has even further exacerbated their "forward" nature which is enjoyable, but often fatiguing. It made me realize that these old speakers were meant to pair with the equipment of the era like a vintage Marantz or a tube amp. Hence me being here researching this Cayin MT-35
muykelly1The forte should work fine even for flea watt amps 300b should sound great
I use cornwalls close to the wall and get great bass and clear highs
my amp is an icon audio stereo SE (single ended) from the UK.
it has 18 watt in triode mode, but at 10 feet from the wall it gives me more than 95db (as much as I tolerate) from 4-6 watts on the amps meter (not super accurate … but u get my drift)
u can buy icon gear from music direct, or from a canadian distributor
either way, u can probably manage a 10 to 15 % discount if you use the phone, rather than the websites
