how is this different than just using a 1/4" foot? I watched Youtube videos and don't really see a difference. Am I missing something?

The main difference is that the needle is right at the front of the presser foot- a regular presser foot manipulates the fabric in front of needle, making it harder to guide the curve. Also, this foot has a scant 1/4" quide .
