I wish there was an add on for a soldered or hotswap pcb that comes with the kit. Shelling out $140 on the barebones and adding $95 just for the case leaving the og case unused is just disappointing lol
That sounds very nice! I've been wanting to get a high profile CTRL but have a low profile right now. This seems a lot less hassle! Even though someone commented to add a purchasable PCB wouldnt be bad, since the other case wont be doing anything. Even one that has to be soldered would be fine imo.
I'll be passing on this one, and I'll wait on the high profile one!
So this is basically a cosmetic upgrade if you already have a CTRL board, right? This does not appear to be part of a DIY kit... there are no internals.
You are correct! With fully custom keyboards, there are definitely highly priced keyboards that have the same components or feature as a more budget friendly boards. But even though they have the same components, they can differ in sound/feel because of their build and construction. So the user may prefer the more budget board versus the highly price board when comparing the two. Generally fully custom boards will contain: case, pcb, plate, from there the keyboard kit can come additionally items such as, a separated daughter board for the usb connection, foam for the case to make the sound better/reduce ping, and vibration dampening foam for in-between the plate and pcb. There is such a large variation of custom keyboards that are coming out, and are in the process of coming out it's really hard to determine what is high end. Though generally in the current state of the hobby it seems that high end boards use gasket mounts to isolate the plate from the case to provide a softer/flexy feel when typing. Of course there are 5 other different type of mounting systems that various design studios and makers use for their keyboard. Generally between the high end - mid end custom keyboards, you may only see differences in design or material since all boards will usually come with QMK/VIA support (which is the standard now). There may be differences in mounting systems or maybe one has per key rbg or underglow though certain features only matter to certain people.
Hey everyone!
We're excited to begin offering aluminum cases for our popular ALT and CTRL Keyboards. Just a heads up, these cases have already been made and are sitting at our warehouse. As much as we want to sell and ship them to you immediately, we're currently backlogged at our warehouse (with 10,000 Holy Panda switch orders currently being packed and shipped out the door). In normal times we could adjust our warehouse labor to accommodate these fluctuations but with social distancing requirements, we need to give people lots of space to stay safe!
The ship-date for this run is set to July 22nd and we likely won't deviate from that by very much (i.e. no production-related delays). All photos featured are of direct production units, not prototypes or renders.
If you've got any questions about these cases, leave them here and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can.
afraidparfaitSame here. I can't believe there isn't a white option - I'm devastated... If there were a white option I'd have bought it without hesitation. The silver looks exactly the same as the standard case.
Hopefully they do this again with a white option!
Wonder if they’ll ever drop a poly carb alt high profile. Would love to see that and would definitely buy. Even better if they also had an option for south facing led hotswap pcb’s to buy with the case. That would be end game for me honestly.
I am part of the first group who purchased the Massdrop CTRL keyboard version with its weak magnets. I feel like early buyers are penalized for being the first to buy the CTRL since the diffuser is an additional cost versus those who purchase the updated Drop CTRL version.
