I want to use this keyboard with my MacBook Pro and would like a short cable like 12" or 18". I've bought 2 so far. One that says it's for Thunderbolt and another that says it's for USB-C. Neither work for me. I think it's because the shorter ones are assumed to be for charging? Can anyone recommend a cable that will work for my scenario or clarify what's going on? Thanks.
KralciferLong Story Short: you need a USB-C to USB-C 2.0 cable, not a 3.0 or 3.1 cable.
Thunderbolt won't work, as it's not the same thing as the USB-C standard. Here's a bit in info that might help you. As far as I have been able to tell with the CTRL (I own two), they only use the USB-C form factor and not the USB-C standard. If you're using a USB-C 3.1 cable with power delivery, odds are it will not work with the CTRL. I haven't gotten any of mine to work.
You'll need something that uses the USB-C form factor, but handles data using the older USB 2.0 standard. Any USB-C to USB-C 2.0 cable will work fine. The key is in USB-C to USB-C 2.0. Aside from the cable that comes with the CTRL, those are the only ones that I have been able to get to work. I don't know about others, but that has been my experience.
The cables I use, and the ones that I find most reliable are the Anker Powerline+ C to C 2.0 cables. They're super reliable, and also durable with the braiding. I've never had one fail on me, and they work perfectly for the CTRL. For about half the price of that one you also have their non-braided Anker Powerline C to C 2.0 cables, and Amazon has their own AmazonBasics line of USB-C 2.0 cables that will also work fine. Although I can't vouch for AmazonBasics USB-C cables or how they compare to Anker's.
The main problem I have found is the size. The shortest length that I can find from brands that I know and trust to be decent would be 3 feet. If that's too long for you and/or you don't want to be stuck with a piece of Chinesium junk, your other option would be to have a custom cable made from somewhere like Zap Cables.
From what I can personally vouch for based on firsthand use and what I know to be reliable, definitely go for the Anker Powerline+ braided cable if you don't want to go the custom route.
