The description says these headphones will be outfitted with "HIFIMAN’s innovative Topology Diaphragms", the same diaphragms found in the HE-R10D headphones ($1299), which also feature (bulging) wood cups.
So the HE-R7DX appears to be a trickle-down product with plastic cups and HIFIMAN's lighter, older-style headband.
If Drop can get the price and tuning right, they could have a winner here.
Resolve (Andrew) said the bass response is directly correlated to the fit and seal of the pads. With a good seal, I would not be surprised if on-the-go bass performance would be of adequate quantity/quality, if not close to ideal.
I mod these R7 into the HE-R9DX JM OCD Extreme Stealth Edition+ for around $100 and make em sound like $500-2800 headphones - it takes me 3 hours and I ship in USA only- JM
WhatugotmanHey, John. As an FYI to readers here, I checked out and was gonna get John's modded R7DX (based on his post above) until I saw some of his other higher-quality offerings and ultimately landed a custom 53mm dynamic closed back that I'm very pleased with...pretty much end-game home-office cans for me, with quality/comfy build, massive bass, clear detail in mids & highs, on-point imaging, and wide stage for a closed back. Also appreciated his friendly & prompt service. Definitely worth checking out.
Why’s it gotta be a DD driver? Is there a closed back planar out there that isn’t 500$? And why would Hifiman be playing with dynamics anyway? It’s not like they’re known for it or anything… I’m just gonna end up buying a used pair of Audeze’s and call it quits…
The problem/beauty about the 1060C is that it's a much better open back than a closed back. I modded mine open, it's kind of like buying a Hellcat and only taking it down to the end of the street if you keep them closed.
Boy, it sure looks like a spare parts assembly. It uses the same old style horrible headband and yokes that Drop seems married to, the Deva/HE-5xx earpads and assembly (as difficult as they are to find good replacements for), and very much likely the same driver series that has been in the HE-350/HE-35x.I mean, I'm game. If it is the same dynamic as used in the 350/35x, it could be pretty fun with a closed back.
Could get the HE-R9 (D): Metal cups & the Deva Pro "R2R" BT, same driver. Also that headband is actually very comfortable compare to most of there other headbands. I almost prefer it to my Aryas.
The headband isn't that bad anymore! The one from a few years ago were. I think they really want to change the design language so they are getting rid of there old stock of parts.
dioporksI actually own he-x4's and that is pretty much all old leftover trickle down parts.
It holds up great, I know the new designs are better but there is some confidence in the last generation of the old design.
Today we are excited to introduce our first closed back headphone with long time collaborator HIFIMAN.
While HIFIMAN is widely known for its planar dynamic drivers they have recently started to branch out into more dynamic drivers featuring their proprietary topology diaphragms. Our aim was to incorporate these drivers into an accessible closed back offering. With an acoustically tuned chamber, the headphone has an engaging, lively sound with a rather spacious soundstage given its closed back design.
The result was a nice sonic contrast to our other HIFIMAN collaborations such as the X4 and 4XX which are on the darker warmer side. The added efficiency also makes it easy to pair with portable dac/amp combos or straight from a laptop for versatility.
We look forward to kicking off the new year with the new HE-R7DX from HIFIMAN.
What, no one likes crocodile dundee's belt for a headband?
Certainly and ugly duckling but I wouldn't mind it if:
a) It measures well and isn't over dampened (like they did with the 800x)
b) It's cheap. $299 max if its measurements stand up. The headband communicates cheaper pricing or it would have the Sundara headband.
As we all know, all of their products with "that" headband are at or under the $~200 range... you also have to figure that they don't want it knocking off sales of the frequently on sale Aeon X Closed... (the only price to buy it at is the sale price of $379)...
It'll also most likely have their absolutely crap single ended cable which you can use as shoe laces in an emergency but it looks like it has the standard mono 3.5mm connectors which there are many aftermarket single ended and balanced cables. I bought a great cable for my Sundara and Focal cans at Fog City Audio (yes, shilling because they're cheap and really good cables for those in need).
Looks like it "did" indicate the price. I'm right. Haha... just having fun and just ordered them because they're so cheap and I'm curious. Looking at the chart, the mid-bass hump is pretty strong - def over Harman but I guess it could be EQ'd down...
