Huge fan of the MT3 style and have been for over a year now. Legends are clear and precise as far as I can tell, the spacebar looks especially clean and crisp. I was previously using doubleshopt PBT cherry caps, these are bit deeper (thoccier) and the spacebar sounds amazing with no mods.
The downsides for me were was no option for red (magma) backspace cap and the front facing legends being bit hard to see on on Ctrl, Alt, and Super keys. Not really sure what could have been done to make these more visible and kept the theme though. This isn't a huge issue for me since I touch type most of the time and rarely look at my keyboard.
Overall, absolutely love these and will keep them as my daily driver for the foreseeable future.
This kit is like the other two; high quality, great fitment. As with the other two, the colors are not exactly the same as the photos, but there is more contrast so it’s actually a good thing. Haven’t typed on it extensively, but if the elvish and dwarvish sets are anything to go by, it will be fantastic.
Drop's usual high quality build and packaging that I have come to expect are present. The profile is great if you like med/high with a fairly aggressive spherical scoop. The kitting was also quite accommodating, but there could have been a bit more improvement in this area.
The new legends are a nice edition to what we have been given with the other kits and the "italicized" elvish font make this set stand out from them.
The shades of the colors are perfect, not so dark as to make the modifier legends "invisible", but dark enough to maintain the theme and allow the alphas to accent well. They also pair beautifully with the original elvish kit.
I love this set.
Unlike some others, I feel the renders are pretty much spot on. Maybe it's because I have a color corrected monitor (not sure). (edit: I didn't compare to the original renders, so maybe I'm wrong - either way, I'm happy with how it came out).
Anyway, my favorite of the LoTR sets, but they are all beautiful without a doubt.
Now to finish the trilogy with the Elves......
I think it's possible some of my disappointment is my own fault. I did not realize the ortholinear kit only came with training legends - I was specifically looking for keycaps that did not have QWERTY legends as I don't type on a QWERTY layout.
Colors: I was under the impression that the set would be darker, but looking at the images in the description of the renders on the boards the alphas are actually LIGHTER in the renders. I ordered these around November I think, and I'm wondering if only the renders showing what's in each kit were available at that time? They're not bad, they just don't scream "black speech" to me with how light the alphas are. They're more of a green/olive hue compared to the render too. The darker caps are pretty accurate to the renders, a bit lighter than the "what's in each kit" render, but close to the board renders.
Legends: The primary legends look great, nice, clear, crisp. The "training" legends are of similar quality, but they just clash so hard with the primary ones. They could have used a more stylized font (similar to what's in the "whats in each kit" renders?? honestly it's hard to even see them since they're kinda fuzzy...) that matched better with the "scratchiness" of the primary legends.
Packaging: The packaging left a bit to be desired, they were mostly jumbled up, half upside down, and a couple of my caps are scratched from sliding against each other. Not a huge deal, luckily the main offenders are on the bottom row and even though the scratches are on the front (where the ugly english "training legend" is..) I flip my bottom row when using sculpted caps. So, lucky for me I don't have to look at scratches or the ugly legends, but beware.
Typing: They type really great, I'm super happy with the profile and sound, and the DEEP scoops on F and J for homing feel amazing. I'm typing this review with them on my Nyquist and couldn't be happier with how they do their job.
TLDR: The colors don't match exactly to either of the ways they were shown in renders (mostly the alphas), the training legends are ugly as sin (imo), they could have been packaged better, but goddangit they type darn good.
I got the hard cores and I love how they look. It will take you a very long time to get used to the missing legends, especially if you like to use your board to code. My only gripe is that there are not enough red keys in the magma set. Also, there is a small error in the magma set for the replacement WASD keys, one of them is missing an accent that the regular key has. Small detail, but it was upsetting. Looks great with the Mordor artisans.
Pre-ordered this set last December and got it last month! I was honestly looking forward to it when March came. When I purchased it, I already knew that I'd be using it on my wooden GK64 and add the Lothlorien keycap to fit the theme. Sadly, it only has one piece of 2u and my GK64 needs 2pcs (back space and left shift key) hence the 4-stars. Loved it nonetheless.
