I think my Kef Egg should outperform these by a bit, can anyone confirm? For now I'm going to pass.

None of the manufacturer's product description, product support, or user manual give any Bluetooth specs beyond confirming it's 4.0 and uses the A2DP and AVRCP profiles. No mention of the codec, whether it supports aptX or AAC or Vorbis or ... For the mini-TOSLINK (Optical/Digital) input, the user manual says "Only the standard PCM audio signals of sampling clock (44.1/48KHz) are adaptable in optical mode."

Is it worth it to upgrade to the HD version? I'm planning on setting this up in the kitchen or my daughter's bedroom with her TV.

Looks like I can get this and FX Audio DAC X6 and that will take care of the missing optical port and I get a better DAC. Winning!

How do these compare to the PSB PS1 speakers for sound? I already have the PSB speakers, and the little PSB sub. Thinking of getting these for another room or I could pick up another set of PS1 speakers for about $10 more than these cost.

Have a Red pair I use in my Kitchen and use optical chromecast audio. I find it is great for vocals. It would be even better to have the option to hook up a sub. The remote is just okay and the touch control can be finicky when trying to adjust the volume. I use chromecast to adjust the volume.

Do I get it right?
  • if I feed them using optical TOSLINK cable, then built-in DAC does signal conversion.
  • if I feed them via Aux In (same socket on the speaker by the way), then my sound card's DAC produces analog signal and speakers just amplify it.
Somebody noticed a difference? I've never connected PC to anything using optical, zero experience.

You are correct about the setup, it will depend on how good your sound card is. If you have a dedicated sound card made for audiophiles/gaming, it might be better. If you have just a regular onboard sound card, the optical might sound better.

Yeah, but we sort of are used to it eh? :) Usually expensive shipping, taxes/customs fees, and a poor warranty/return for repair coverage.

50hz with a 3" driver? Even with passive radiators I am skeptical. I'd love to see the 3db down point on that. That aside, these are possibly tolerable speakers for a bedroom or office. I'm laughing my head off at that pic suggesting home theatre use. The specified wattage would not be adequate for the dynamic range most movies and long form TV require.
