Some I'm a little torn here. I'm looking for a good set of speakers for my modest dorm set up, and my decision was narrowed down to these(1280s) and the Lunas.
Unfortunately, I just missed the Lunas...
Can anyone shed some light on the differences between the two?
I'm looking for a tight low end with a little punch(maybe even a little sub-bass?), clear mids for music, and detailed highs for games.
The Lab GeekI did you a kindness and requested this drop again (assuming you didn't order it last round). These blow my hk soundsticks out of the water in terms of quality. Think of these as "the best $99 bookshelf speakers money can buy" and there ya go. Boom! (mass) DROP dat mic!
JohnStamosLOL thanks! I actually ended up pulling the trigger though. These were exactly what I was looking for... And you're right. For $100, these are pretty spectacular. I paired them with a Polk sub for a little extra rumble, and battlefield has never felt so good!
The Lab GeekI'm actually having a hard time finding a powered sub that will work with these Edifiers because there's no sub out (only feature I wish they had) did you run everything through an external mixer or did you find a sub with multiple inputs? I'm actually using a few inputs on the 1280's and would hate to have to triple my cables from source, source, source > mixer > sub, speakers.
FrankieLowlifeI run the sub and speakers with this bad boy right here (purchased mine used for $210):
https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V383BL-5-1-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B06XXR6JK3
My Xbox and PC are connected to a generic, multi-channel optical splitter that runs into the back of the receiver. I had to get a little creative with cable management, but when set up like this, all I need do is switch the channel on the splitter for my desired platform. You can leave the sub and speakers on 24/7, or turn them off independently to save power. The sub is an inexpensive Polk 10 inch, found here:
https://www.amazon.com/Polk-10-Inch-Powered-Subwoofer-Single/dp/B0002KVQBA
I have the 1280's about 10 feet apart, and they can easily fill up my living room with clear, detailed sound, but the kick/rumbles from the Polk under the table are what truly brings it all together. I haven't experienced any issues with Bluetooth, stereo or 5.1 in terms of sound quality, and the receiver itself is built like a f***ing tank so I don't see it breaking anytime soon , *fingers crossed*.

The Lab GeekWow that was way more in depth than I was expecting! Thanks! I've been trying to shy away from buying a standalone receiver just to keep things minimal (I also already have a lot of stuff in the console already) but it seems like the more research I do, the more I might have to invest. Either that or find another use for my brand new Edifiers and get another set of bookshelf speakers with more inputs. Thanks again for the rundown though, that is super helpful!
FrankieLowlifeNo problem, I try to help out where I can... Massdrop forums are more product focused, and are kind of hit and miss for assembly and wiring concerns. Head Fi and Reddit are loaded with great ideas if you want to try them out. Good luck with your reasearch!
