camdatI think I would have had more of an issue with trying to fiddle with the SMDs than the process that I had to do for the traditional diodes (you meant diodes, not resistors right?).
What I had to do was put the diode in place, flip the board over to clip the leads flush to the board, then flip the board back over and solder it on component side. This was because if I had soldered on the lead side then tried to trim the lead flush, a thickness of solder is harder to cut and I didn't want to have an accident and scratch across the board. The top side of the board where the diode goes through is covered by the MX switch and even through the switch has a tiny space under it for that because of its feet, it still had to be incredibly tight. It wasn't too difficult, and after doing 76 of them I was a pro. This is using a $15 pencil soldering iron (35W or 25W I think) that I bought 20 years ago and I only solder once in a blue moon.
As far as the case fitting, it was AOK for me as that "slice" of the case is a bit thicker than say the top and bottom.

@nathan I just thought of a concern that I should mention.
As far as the NumLk/CapsLkScrLk LEDs, I chose not to install them at this time as I was planning a mod that will include some more LEDs for other indicators. This meant that I did not want them under the keycaps where they are intended to be placed. Now that I look at my through-hole placement of the diodes on those switches, they cover over the holes for the LEDs and it would be difficult to figure out how to get them in there. When using the SMDs this would not be a problem.
So if you intend to install the LEDs as per instructions, you may want to at least use the SMD diodes on these 3 switches.
