What is SpaceFN and why you should give it a try
The SpaceFN concept - setting up your space key as a layer switch when held - is probably one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby. Let me explain how it works. My SpaceFN article on kbd.news made some rounds recently - quite surprisingly given the age of this concept. This piece you're reading is a condensed version of the full post. - and was surprised that the soldering was a lot easier than I had feared.

More background: Last year I bought a proper solder station for my R/C helicopters hobby, so I had the tools but not the experience (soldering big EC5 plugs to thick cables is not the same thing ;))

Anyway, the ErgoDox worked on the first try, and it's a great feeling to type on a keyboard you put together on your own. I'm currently using it at work on a trial basis - after a few weeks I'll either stick to it or go back to the Kinesis Advantage.

So all in all, no need to fear assembly, it's easier than it seems. You do need some patience and tools though. That first one took me about 5 hours, and I'm actually looking forward to building the next one (with Cherry clears this time) from round 3. :)
