So is this a proper subsitute for a whetstone? Like, does it out-perform a whetstone at sharpening or does it do an average job? I joined mostly because I thought it was cool and don't have anything like it, so I was wondering how good it really is.

FancyMichae1It's pretty small, so I don't think it's fair to review it as a home whetstone, it's more of a mobile thing. It can definitely make your knives sharp enough, it even wears down the cmp 3v steel in one of my knives. But learning to sharpen with a stone like this is a bit of a curve you need to climb, but after that it's the best way to do it.
