DragonzeanseHaven't tried it on heftier offerings but using it with my Fostex TH900 right now and the custom EQ to fix the dips in the mids and sibilance in the highs makes for a really nice pairing (for a budget DAP)

idklelIt makes a great budget intermediate all around system. Lots of storage options + usb dac and amp (with direct line out if you have another amp)

GL1TCH3DThis is a really pricey x5. Could get the d90 at this price.

atdcPersonally I would rather add one more hundred to get the AK100 MK1. I have heard DX50 AND DX90 are really buggy.

NightSnowVampireThe DX50/90 is buggy, but less so than the fiio x3/x5. The problems with the dx90 are minor. But with the fiio x3, I can't even use it for a day without it crashing. AK100 seems like a rip off to me. And the AK100 is like $280 more than the DX90 and doesn't sound as good. They also screwed up the impedance and that's why there's a MK2 :)

boooooooooI heard that most of the major bugs happened on Fiio X3 are fixed on X5, not sure if that is true. And which one is better for listening to Jazz and pure instrumental music?(DX90/50 or Fiio X5 or some other ones around the same price)

NightSnowVampireThe dx90 is the most neutral of the 5. The x5 feels warm and there's a bump in the bass If I had to guess you would probably like the dx90 sound quality better. I know I do. But the usb dac for the dx90 is still in beta right now or something. It works for some and for others it doesn't. And they don't have mac support and I don't think they plan on adding it.

boooooooooThat sounds great to me as I do not use apple computers. The only problem is if I can find any store selling DX90 in Canada.

boooooooooOn Head Fi reviews, it's the dx90 which is warmer and with unnatural bass boost.. X5 have more detail, natural bass, darker soundstage (so more natural..). The problem of the bass is just because firmware was below 2.0 version. After 2.0+ ones, it has been corrected.
I own the X5, and no bug at all after 3 month..
DX90 has freeze problems, sound problem because of the default battery. ( http://www.head-fi.org/t/697035/ibasso-dx90-dual-sabre-1st-page-to-reformat-and-fw-download-general-information/6045#post_10627672 ) Without speaking of 5-6hours playing time max with FLAC
With my X5 + C5 Jds Labs, I use 25% battery of X5 in 8 hours FLAC play time.
Anyway, there aren't one better than the other. There is only the one you prefer in sound term. Like headphone/IEM. And I agree it's too expensive for just a wheel upgrade......

XXXXI found the bass to be way too much on my se846 with the x5 where my dx90 sounded more natural. I guess that meant I had the old firmware? I haven't had it in like 2 months. http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/headphones-earphones-portable-media-devices-314/ibasso-dx90-dx50-fiio-x5-just-fiio-e17-4651774.html See! I'm not the only one who thinks the fiio x5 has more bass! I just read a few reviews and I don't see people saying that the dx90 is warmer or bass boosted, but people say there's bass emphasis on the x5
The battery on the x5 is obviously better. They even list it on the website too, but over the years x5 batteries will slowly lose its capacity whereas the dx90 is user replaceable. And I'm pretty sure the battery lasts nowhere as long as you say on the x5. Didn't even know they had the battery percentage, only an image of a battery bar, which can be inaccurate at times. Note: My 1st gen ipod touch lasts like 10 minutes on a full charge:)
And I've never had the DX90 crash or freeze on me. I have the anker 2200, and if the stock battery is the only problem then it isn't really much of a problem Also, with the se846 and x5 there is hissing going on in the background. The impedance isn't very good for low impedance IEMs like the se846.
Anyway, the main reason why I kept the dx90 over the x5 is because of the design. I like how you can shuffle through songs without having to turn it on or taking it out of your pocket. With the x5 it's easy to accidentally press it and the hold option is in the UI instead of a switch. And if you use the hold button then you can't shuffle while it's in your pocket. I found the x5 constantly switching songs when I don't want it to especially when walking. I'm the type of person who doesn't listen to half the songs on the playlist. I like how the headphone jack is on the bottom or how it's touch screen which makes it easier to navigate through songs. The controls aren't confusing and more intuitive than the x5. I can do the things I need to do faster on the dx90. And the shuffle actually feels random on the dx90 whereas the x5 feels like it's shuffling in the same order. Simple stuff like that is what made me choose the dx90 over the x5. The wheel was fun to play with though on the x5! I found myself spinning it for no reason at times.
Generally speaking, the dx90 is regarded to be a better DAP in terms of sound quality because of its dual sabre DACs, but it all comes down to your opinion in the end.

NightSnowVampireYou should go visit the dx90 thread on headfi. I'm no battery expert and there's people saying the battery makes a difference in the sound quality. I don't want to lead you the wrong way just in case you believe in that. The dx90 uses the s3 battery.
