1. Physical: The packaging was very simple and a bit disconcertingly flimsy, the miniplug adapter did not exactly scream quality, and the ear cups have some slight roughness in both fit and manufacture at a few edges (but they do look very nice overall). Came a with a nice "new headphone" smell :). They're very comfy, but the ear pad material feels a little thicker (for better or worse) than the material on the 900's (though I think you can replace 900 pads for like $25, so no biggie). Not that ANY of that has anything to do with what's actually important here.
2. Sound: Bass - this hits you right away and it's the first thing I notice vs. the 900's. Soundstage is definitely not as wide nor are instruments as isolated; and, to me, they're not as precise/detailed as the 900's nor do they sound or feel as "airy" and "focused" as the 900's. Tonally, the low lows seem tight and forward and strong, the higher lows to the low mids do seem a bit muddy (but still good), the mid to high mids are very strong and that the highs are very good (but not sure if that's the recording or my imagination - I won't pretend to have golden ears). When comparing these against the 900's, the brightness of the 900's highs become even more obvious.
I am, obviously, critically listening for differences vs. the 900's, and who knows how much is placebo and the need to justify having spent 5x on the 900's. The X00's are, overall, fantastic closed back headphones. And, if the "break in period" is a real thing, then maybe they can sound even better after more time. Hopefully I'll be inspired to give this post an update in a week or two.
ps, I also remembered that I had a pair of Denon AH-D7000's. Based on a fairly quick/limited listen with the Denon's, which sound closer to the 900's than the X00's, I think, overall, my statements above are correct (IMHO, YMMV, etc.).
