I'm thinking about getting this without switches, and then getting a set of tactile greys to solder in. Currently undecided whether to get the keycaps that come with it or just use some standard-sized blank white ones I have lying around. I've been wanting to get one of these do-it-yourself kits for a while, and this one seems inexpensive and relatively easy. Now a few questions:
1.) Will the "standard" layout work with standard keycaps designed for "normal" MX-based keyboards? (assuming yes)
2.) How many layers are possible? The online configurator doesn't seem to have a limit.
3.) What is the intended purpose of the "fun" key, lol
4.) How do you go about flashing layers to the board? Is it just a program?

asdflord(1) There’s a short right shift + extra function key next to it, and a split up top right key (on a standard keyboard that’s a 2x1-size backspace). But those are relatively obtainable keycaps, as there are several other keyboards which short right shift, and the top right just needs 1x1 caps, so anything will work there.
(2) I think the limit is in the hundreds of thousands of layers maybe? I’m not precisely sure. In practice, it’s effectively infinite.
(3) “function”; used on keyboards like the HHKB as a layer-switcher. The other key labeled "function" in that diagram is a windows/command/meta/super key.
(4) You can get a firmware binary generated by the online configurator, or download the firmware source code and compile it yourself on your own machine.
