Sorry if a dumb question but is this a rollerball or ballpoint pen? It says; " The EDK is also compatible with any standard Parker-style ballpoint refill. " but I believe the Schmidt refill mentioned is a rollerball.

SilvermountainThe EDK ships with a Schmidt P8126 (black), which is a rollerball cartridge, but will also accept will accept any Parker style ballpoint refill, including the Fisher Space pen refill, a pressurized ballpoint that will write at any angle -Fisher refills are shipped with a Parker adapter. I favor the Fischer because it is waterproof and will write on wet surfaces.
If you prefer gel cartridges, the Karas Kustoms Retrakt accepts the Pilot G2 refill (with its huge range of colors and widths) or Parker ballpoint compatible refills (with adaptor or spacer).

NovanglianYou really know your stuff. Thank you. Are you aware of either the EDK or the Retrakt will accept Sarasa Dry refills?

The Karas Kustoms EDK is a wonderful, rugged pen with great refill choices (Schmidt 2186, Fisher Space, Parker, etc), but if you buy directly from Karas Kustoms, you can get pretty much the same deal, or a slightly better deal, if you’re a first time buyer - without the uncertainty and delay of a MD purchase
MD pricing on this drop 50.99 EDK (basic) 3.50 Shipping 54.49 Total
Karas Kustoms’ pricing: 60.00 EDK (basic) 0 Shipping 60.00 Total
But, if you’re a first-time buyer you get a 10% discount for a 54.00 total. And, obviously, if you buy one of the more expensive versions of the pen, or multiple pens, the 10% discount will mean that your direct purchase price will even more substantially below the MD price.
If you’re not a first-time buyer, the MD pricing does give you a 9% discount, which isn’t bad – but it’s still only a $5.51 saving, which is offset by the inconvenience and waiting for MD shipping.
And, once again, the shipping charge more than doubles to $7.75, if you buy two pens … Who else increases the per-unit shipping cost when you buy two of the same item?

NovanglianThanks... I was just looking at this as well. I don't get it. What is the point of purchasing "en masse" if you are not going to pass on any real savings???

Love the pen and the Schmidt p8126 certainly writes nice. This refill is a pocket risk, however. The rollerball easily engages and of course the clicky pen is the most likely to engage in a pocket (for which this pen was specifically designed). Ruined a pair of pants on day one. Hesitant now.

Great pen! But a not a great deal even at the lowest MD prices - and actually more expensive than buying direct from from Karas Kustoms (http://karaskustoms.com), if you're a first time buyer.
The lowest MD discounted prices on this drop are a decent $9.01 below the regular price from Karas (with free shipping), but since the actual, full MD price will include a $3.50 shipping fee, your actual MD discount will be $5.51.
(And, BTW, the shipping charge more than doubles to $7.75, if you buy two pens.)
By itself, a $5.51 discount isn't bad - it would amount to a 9% discount on the least expensive version of the pen, or a 7% discount on the most expensive version. I might even join the drop, since I'm a regular customer at http://karaskustoms.com. But ...
But, if you're a first time buyer from Karas Kustoms, they'll give a 15% discount on your entire first order if you sign up for their newsletter - which is actually informative and amusing. So, for the least expensive version of this pen, a first-time buyer could get it directly from Karas for $51.00 (including free shipping) or you can get it from MD for $54.49 ($50.99 plus $3.50 shipping). And, obviously, if you buy one of the more expensive versions of the pen, or multiple pens, the 15% discount will mean that your direct purchase price will even more substantially below the MD price.
I have several of these pens and they are genuinely excellent. The versions I have run from the very light raw aluminum model (1.6 oz) which is great for daily in-pocket carry, to the much heavier raw brass model ( 2.1 oz) which has a heft that makes it a pleasure to use at my desk. The Schmidt P8126 cartridges are also exceptional.

NovanglianLast time I checked, Karas Kustoms only allow us to apply coupon code for discounts or opt for free shipping. And not both. Plus, they use UPS which is quite expensive for non-US orders, so the shipping cost here on Massdrop is way cheaper for some of us.

fadonThanks, Fadon! For US orders, Karas will both honor a discount coupon and provide free ground shipping via UPS - as they did with an order I just placed. No doubt you are correct that this is not the case for international orders, where ground shipping could be problematic, to say the least.

This is a terrific pen and I own two -- highly recommended. But MD is going to have to offer a better price than this, otherwise, what is the point of waiting for a drop to occur?

Wow, mine is already here and it shipped yesterday. Fastest turnaround I've seen on MD yet.
Well, mine pen shipped this AM. I kind of feel special...

Says the clip is not included. What kind of crap is that? Did I misread?

ThurlClip is included. The not included is in reference to the diameter of the pen.

ThurlI had the same initial reaction to that badly-worded part of the description -- the clip IS included. The writer simply meant that the clip was not included when measuring the size of the pen. :-)

I wonder if the all brass version would make a good self defense tool if ever the need arose?. Anybody have the all brass one? How has it held up, ever drop it?

MRichIt might be a little last but I have an all copper one. It's very heavy. It might work in a pinch if you need to jab it into a soft spot. It doesn't handle drops very well though. The metal "clicking" machanism is made out of all brass, except for a small stainless steel ball bearing. If it's dropped on the tip when it's out it causes the steel ball to deform the softer brass around it and then it doesn't work as well.
MRichI have the all-brass version, as well as the black aluminum version. The brass is holding up to daily use, developing a nice patina where I don't rub it off through constant use. It suffered a little deformation at the tip when I dropped it from numb-from-cold fingers one winter's day, but responded well to a little surgery using a needle file. It's heavy, but that's a reminder if it does not make it back to my pocket, though that is rare as I watch it like a hawk LOL
