After tax and shipping for the black key cap and white font, it is only a buck less than MK. What is the point of group buy? Group buy is suppose to significantly reduce the cost to members.
The recent mechanical keyboard related drops do not have the group buy spirit, at least price-wise. Most the items are at almost retail price when compared with other vendors. The only good deal in the last couple weeks is the doubleshot ABS key caps. Not not to mention that you have to wait for 3 weeks for this set to be shipped to you.
I ordered my TEX 60% aluminum case form MK on Monday and I got it today using the free shipping. Talk about speed.
add1ct3ddmechanicalkeyboards.com, basically same item, same price, faster free shipping, and you can return/exchange if you get a defective set. ( which its well documented that KBT's QC sucks )
add1ct3ddI placed the order of my TEX 60% aluminum case on Monday with MK. They shipped it out Tuesday and I got it yesterday. MK costs $10 more ($120) than the MD's drop on that case. However, MK has more color options, no sales tax (at least for me) and faster shipping. And most important of all, they don't lie to you and treat you like an idiot. That is what I call great customer service.
JixrI can agree with you on the QC part. I got my TEX 60% aluminum case yesterday. While in the process of removing the screws from the original case, I found one screw is pretty much "screwed" (the top thread is gone). I guess they used powered tool to put the screw in the place. I had to use a hand saw to saw off a portion of the case and use 2 pliers to remove the screw. Now my Pure Pro is in its new shell and I love it.
bassIt is sad to see Massdrop's mechanical keyboard drops decrease in quality recently. When I bought the original doubleshot PBT caps, they were $33+shipping. I was also able to get a Ducky TKL, with no backlight, and an extra side-printed PBT keycap set for only $94+ shipping. I feel like Massdrop is creating drops knowing that they cannot create competitive prices and they hope that the masses don't look up the prices.
EvilcamelSame DS PBT caps like this one for $33+shipping?
They have been dropping the ball left and right lately. You and I can both agree that their prices on the mechanical keyboard related items are not very competitive. Their audio drops have better discount than this mk category. For example: AKG 712 headphone is $40 cheaper than Amazon. Why can't the MK related products get better prices? Of course, they can keep the prices high, but there are other people selling the same stuff for the same price and faster shipping.
What would smart shoppers do? Take their business and money somewhere else.
bassThe molds for the last version were a little off and the font was even worse but yes, $33 for DS PBT caps. It really is too bad Massdrop has decided to increase prices to increase their profits at the cost of losing the 'community' they tried to create.
EvilcamelEvilcamel, like you said, I looked up some prices. I did some research and found KBtalKing's website. It is actually a forum. The forum owner/host designs the Poker/Pure/Race series. The forum owner/keyboard designer put up a post about KBtalKing key caps (the same one as the one in this drop) on 4/29/2014. Here is the link: http://kbtalking.cool3c.com/article/79720
Google Translate actually does a good job translating the post from Chinese to English, if you wish to read it.
At the end of the post and next to every key cap photo, it lists pricing:
Black (white legends): NT 1290 = approx. USD $43. The lowest possible pricing on here is $49
Bi-color: NT 1690 = approx. USD $56. The lowest possible price on here is $59
NT (or Yuan) is Taiwan dollar. I used Yahoo currency exchange for the conversion.
Since the pricing is directly from KBtalKing, I consider this is the MSRP. Vortext, the manufacturer, doesn't have a website (only FB). It won't much luck to find actual pricing from Vortex. Therefore, there is no credible source to verify Massdrop's claimed MSRP of $79.99.
If KBtalKing's MSPR is lower than the lowest possible group buy pricing here, I don't understand why MD's price can't go any lower? Maybe back to the $33 per set?
bass@bass I'll definitely present these data points to KBtalKing, and see if they are willing to be more flexible with pricing given that there has been precedent for the same products at a lower selling price.
They did make it very clear that the cost for this is quite a bit higher than the standard PBT Doubleshot Keycaps, so it's unlikely we will be able to convince them to reduce the pricing by that far.
nelsonYou may want to extend the drop for couple more days, since you have only few hours left and need 40 more to reach the lowest price point. However, that is totally up to you.
If you can get a lower price point than the current one, I am sure there will be a lot of people joining this buy. If you can get a lower pricing like $33 per set, I will get a set to support you.

Since no changes have been made to the campaign, it will continue and end as expected.
