The Hifiman 4xx (assuming its based on a 400i)will be closer to the 880 in terms of sound signature. It wouldnt be a huge upgrade though, mostly less distortion in the bass. Both of them will require you to buy a amp if you dont have one (assuming you dont since you got the 32ohm Dt880).
That said, as Vishmaw said (regarding the 880, but still true with the 990), these have a different sound. I wouldn't call the treble recessed by any means (I know he didn't actually call it recessed, but the word seems to strike fear into some). The 880 is known for being hot, and the 990 is supposedly even hotter up top. These are a lot more laid back up top than either will be, especially yours, but I don't find them lacking in any capacity. The midbass is pretty forward, and does lend itself to some bloom, but not a smeared and mushy bloom. It's more that it's easily noticeable coming from a faster planar driver that doesn't do it.
No idea on the R70X, but I can't really recommend the HE-4XX myself. Of the two I have, the HD6XX is the easy choice.
