Mine just arrived! But I’m at work so I have to wait a little. Anyone else get their pair and given them a try? Curious to hear some early impressions outside of my own once I form them.

bcaulfNever mind. Now that I’ve heard them, they are...excellent. I hope people start talking about these more.

bcaulfI'd love to hear more sound impressions when you're ready. Another poster just had a complaint about the fit and build quality - are these an issue for you?

andycherryI’d be delighted! I had issues with fit on the first day but now they’re feeling more comfortable and fitting better for me. No real issues with build either. I’m surprised someone would complain about the build; Beyerdynamic headphones are known for their top-class build and durability. My unit came with the left side of the headband not inserted properly but after some research this seems to be a common issue with Beyers and is an easy fix. The cable is the one thing I have an issue with. The cable coils like crazy. Onto sound, I really love these. Their overall tonality is actually a little warmer than I expected, almost HD650-esque but with a little more extension in the lows and highs. I have only listened with the velour pads so far. The bass is just right I would say. I was expecting these to be bassy but they are actually sounding pretty neutral in the bass and it’s a little on the softer side, but it is tight, clean and never sounds muddy or boomy. The lambskin pads would probably provide more impact. My other closed back, the B&O H6 has more low-bass that can be a bit much at times, but less midbass. The DT 177X has the better balance. Leading up to the mids, everything sounds robust and full. The mids, I am pleasantly surprised by. Of course I did not expect the 177X to have magical Sennheiser midrange but it’s no slouch at all, in fact it might even be more accurate. The mids are natural and balanced from the low mids to the upper mids, where there’s just the slightest dip to prevent any forwardness which I enjoy. Vocals have excellent presence and are very compelling, they are just where I want them in the mix. Guitars have a satisfying weight and hefty tone. The mids have enough detail for its price range. So not too far off from the 6XX and much better than the H6, which have a dip in the low and upper mids which takes away presence and sometimes has vocals sounding like they’re sung through a phone. On the 177X, everything sounds right. Treble is always the cause for concern with Beyers. The 177X has Beyer treble but fortunately it is much more tolerable than their other headphones. To put it into perspective, I couldn’t stand the DT 770 because it more often than not was too forward in its treble, and the sibilance was like a knife. Even in some neutral recordings, they were too bright and it cast over the rest of the music in a way that wiped out any enjoyment. On the DT 177X it is much better. It rarely gets too bright, the treble sounds full. You can tell there are some peaks here and there and sibilance can still be heard, more than the H6 and HD6XX, but now it’s much more controlled and hardly distracting. I like this because the treble still sounds sweet, yet it still reveals recording flaws to you, just in a way that’s much less intrusive. The other two headphones have a better balanced and smoother, “nicer” treble, but again, the 177X is more honest. Imaging is excellent, detail retrieval is excellent. Soundstage is okay...really not much better than my other two comparison headphones. Overall, this headphone has restored my faith in Beyerdynamic. I think they struck the perfect balance between studio reference and consumer friendly. I’m really enjoying them so far and it’s still early :)

bcaulfDissappointment... the cable is sooo JANK... can't get it to stay straight... the build is cheaper than the demo units... and the sound is different and closer to beyer stock sound with less bass emphasis than the 1770 or the 177x demo units... i don't find the sound bad. It actually is very neutral and detailed... but not what i wanted... the demo set sounded like a 1770 without any peaks or bloat... these sound closer to a 6xx with better soundstage and detail... no bass compared to what i thought i was getting... very dissapointed in the end... maybe there is a way to get a demo unit still? Drop?

zep483Interesting to hear these sound different from the demo unit. I think the bass is just about perfect but I like a slightly warm/neutral bass. I would suggest trying the lambskin pads, I imagine they’ll give you more bass.

zep483I find this very misleading... I believe some us bought also because of the reviews of the demo units... if the demo units are substantially different than the real thing is not a good sign, and someone is better to wait for the rig go into production and then see the reviews. Very bad if it is true. I will check on mine.

bcaulfLambskins: A bit more, but they also remove some of the air... its a trade off. Yeah the bass isn't bad on this unit.. its fine... but not what I was expecting. Also, if I hadn't heard the demo pair, I'd think these are great... but the demo pairs were PERFECT, so I know what was possible, and what they ended up with was not as amazing. It is like the curse of knowing now...

ricamzAgreed. Sort of... I just got lucky to hear the demo unit... but yeah, I was hoping for the same thing, because that demo unit was amazing. These are much more balanced than the demo unit was. So if that's what you want, then you probably win with the change. I just know what that bass sounded like... and I WANTED it... I didn't get it...

zep483Yep, everyone’s preferences are different. I know myself I prefer a more balanced signature, and the bass is enough for me for sure...but I can understand the disappointment if this really does sound different from the demo unit for those who heard it. That means just about every review that came out prior to this headphone’s shipment might be a bit misleading too.
