Does a bear canister fit inside this pack?

I have a Bearvault 500 and it fits both inside the pack (stowed vertically) or on top of the pack horizontally. When the Bearvault is stowed on top, both the Y strap and the brain will strap around the vault. If I were hiking without the pack’s brain, I might want to lash the vault down with some extra cord for extra stability. (Tip: put your food in a bag inside your Bearvault. Hike with the food lower in your pack, and carry the empty Bearvault on top: better weight distribution.)

Short answer—Yes! I used this pack on the John Muir Trail this summer (bear can is REQUIRED) and I had no trouble fitting my BV500 with all my gear inside. Sleeping bag was at the bottom, then bear can vertical. I then packed my soft gear(Clothes layers) in the corners around the can so I didn’t feel the back panel barreling out. Finally, stove and anything I didn’t need in the day on top of the can. This felt great! Comfortable and stable! Oh yeah, the back mesh pocket was big enough for my 6Moons lunar solo tent and even more gear! Great pack for a great price! Happy sauntering!

I agree with takeahike below. Probably the best spot would be on top of the pack. I don’t use the top lid and the top strap is quite long and a “Y” design, I think more than likely designed to secure a can. I use a Bearvault 500 but haven’t used it with the Crown. I’m pretty sure it would easily fit inside vertically as well. If I have to use a bear can I’m more likely to grab my ULA Catalyst. Unless bound by regulation I’m moving to an Ursack with a Loksak liner as well.

Tctower12Sure I guess. But it take a bunch of your vertical space away in the main body. I REALLY wish pack makers would give us much more strap to work with on top and the sides of packs and let us clip/melt excess. I get not wanting stuff hanging but the weight penalties are minimal and and flexibility is amazing.

I put a Bearvault 500 inside my Crown2 60L (which is pretty much the same pack) without any problems.

I have done up to 7 days with a BV500 horizontally in the regular sized version of this pack. It's a tight fit but it works. I pack sleeping pad and warm clothes on bottom, then bear can on top of that horizontally so it's at the small of my back, then tent body, rain gear and ditty bag, with a 3l water bladder sitting up top and a sit pad on top of the bladder to insulate it from the sun. I never use the brain.

ULGearNerdSo were you able to fit the bv500 inside horizontally? Cause everybody says only vertically. It is important cause I would like to use this pack on JMT. Thank you in advance

My BV450 fits easily into the pack, set horizontally so that the flat part is against my back. It leaves plenty of room for my other gear

I use a canister on it's side as the first thing in the bottom of my pack. It rests nicely up against my back that way and there is still plenty of room above it.

You can put the canister sideways under the top. Then cinch down all the straps. This will work if the lower portion is cranked on. But to better answer the question, my son put both my canister and his in his Crown this past summer. He liked the pack with more weight. He's on Cross Country. I of course liked my Crown with less weight.

Yes, it fits in good, but as with all packs you lose a lot of space. Although, there's still enough room in the pack for a multi day trip.

I don't know. I use an Ursak or a Zpacks bag with the Loksak scent proof bags. I would check the interior dimensions of the pack and compare that to the bear canister. I think you could easily attach the bear can to the top between the pack and the brain of the pack or just on top if you decide not to use the brain. The strap that wraps over the pack is quite long and could probably fit as long as your bag isn't packed to capacity.

Is this waterproof? Water resistant?

Same as below again. Water resistant. I use both a large clear poly bag as a pack line AND a Silnylon pack cover to keep the Crown from wetting out. It would probably help to spray DWR on the pack from time to time

The regular fits a 18-21 " torso, while the long fits a 21-24" torso.
