FINALLY got a balanced cable for these and boy do they sound much better with gobs of power and additional headroom out of the THX 789. The typical "grainy-ness" I get from planars is almost non-existent here and really helps deliver a cleaner, tighter sound compared to listening to SE out of the same amp.
jaydunndidditI have the 400i and have been looking at getting a new amp for them, as i am using the Fiio e17 currently. For the money, my top pick is the THX 789 right now. I have a $400 including tax and shipping budget. Can you think of a better amp for the money for the HE-400i?
JonnyModenaAs long as you're running them balanced, no. There will be very few (if any) pieces of gear the 789 will not be able to push to uncomfortable listening levels. With the 4XX, I use gain 2 and control the volume via an SMSL SU8 and I don't go above 18 (out of 38). volume-wise. Also removes some of the grain or roughness I hear in the treble region and tightens the bass. I've always enjoyed the 4XX but the 789 just kicked that up a few notches with gobs of power and great control.
jaydunndidditThat’s great news. Can’t wait to buy one. Glad the drop is not active rt now because I just bought the Audiofrog GB tweets for my Accord and need a month-ish long buffer before I buy anything else. But yes, the 789 is in the top of my list. Thanks for your input
JonnyModenaSince I primarily listen to music at home with a desktop 2.1 system, I got the Emotiva A-100 Flex amp. 1.3watts @ 300 ohms, 12+watts @ 32ohms. Paired with the Emotiva PT-100 preamp/DAC/tuner, it is a monster headphone setup, and works great with my 94db ADS L810's as well.
Forgot to add, the price for both pieces is $528/shipped. Best deal in audio.
jaydunndidditI have had similar results driving my 4xx with Aune X7S Balanced output. It's a significant difference in sound quality compared to the SE output. I feel like I have a new set of headphones.
