A "Massdrop Community Collaboration", "Massdrop Made" Jacket, which we wont actually make available to half the Massdrop Community!
Those of us in NZ can't buy the jacket, nor can anyone in Australia, or UK and the entire EU! So where the hell can you buy this unless you live in the States?
It's hard not to get cynical about Massdrop, supposedly a group buying community for the benefit of members all over the world, that apparently allows a manufacturer to tell it who it can and cant sell its own Massdrop exclusive jacket design to.
AotearoanJust use a US based reshipper service which provides a US address. Comgateway or Borderlinks. I've done this loads of times for my drops.
It's not Massdrop's fault they can't ship- blame the manufacturer for allowing their distributors to put your part of the world under a protectionist fence.
Stich43You can indeed; Outfitters Store Auckland has them for NZ$399.95 - approx USD$287. Personally I much prefer the more utilitarian design and black colour of the "Massdrop" jacket and would not consider the jacket at the NZ price.
Unfortunately we have some of the greediest outdoor retailers in the world in NZ, and nowadays manufacturers are enabling them by preventing us from buying their products elsewhere with their protective distribution rights.
RockyMountainsYes I use freight forwarders aswell. The point with this drop, is it is supposed to be a Massdrop exclusive. Not a jacket that other distributors will be selling, who need to be protected. Massdrop wont be undercutting anyone elses price or selling to a country that already has precious local suppliers selling the same jacket. It is supposedly Massdrops own product.
AotearoanRRP is USA $225 for the same jacket which is $321NZD + GST is $369 . Meaning $30 for freight. Sounds not overly greedy. Comparing apples with apples.
AotearoanSeriously? You compare a discounted price vz a recommended retail price and tell us how greedy retailers are, then when I get a price from a US website and compare it with the NZ retail you have an issue about retail prices? Duh! Apples with apples! Also when you buy from a NZ retailer you are paying duty, customs charges, which support your country as well as wages, tax, rates power etc that all benefit you.
Stich43My original comments were about a jacket exclusive to Massdrop, at a great price which you can't buy anywhere else. Then you, someone who has never purchased anything from Massdrop, never made a comment before, nor contributed to Massdrop in any way felt the need to start trolling my comments.
And guess what, you're the director for the distributors of Rab NZ; singing a patriotic tune while you enrich yourself ripping off fellow Kiwis with your obscene pricing.
AotearoanWe are working with Rab to see if we can open up distribution to key member countries, with Australia and New Zealand being at the top of our list. We'll notify you if anything changes. We can't stop you from using a freight forwarder.
DannyMilksThank you
Having now had first hand experience of how our local distributors interfere and actually take the time to monitor the comments on your site and influence our personal buying choices, it's become a whole lot clearer what an onerous task that might be.
Aotearoan> It is supposedly Massdrops own product.
'Supposedly' but it's still got RAB plastered on it, and let's face it, it's really clearly a RAB product which is why people would want it :)
I used to live in Oz and was blown away by how high things were priced there because of the distributor middleman layer. over a grand for Osprey packs that were selling for 40% of that in the States.
I really like RAB gear, but this jacket is just off the list as I can't understand why the hand pockets are missing. IMO hadn pockets are a fundamental design requirement in an outer shell, possibly unless it's a crazy-niche climbing jacket.
RockyMountainsAs to the hand pockets missing, they aren't. For a backpacker/thru hiker, the pockets are useless weight as they are most often obscured by the hipbelt on a backpack.
Leonidas13"Missing" in that they removed the pockets when making the Massdrop version- the original version has the pockets, and is explicitly a climber/mountaineering jacket, which is also obvious from the short length, and slim fit. It could of course be used for other things, but it's fundamentally a climbing jacket.
Damn, the more I look at the original, the more I want it.
Leonidas13Leonidas , please..... it is obvious that you are not either.... otherwise you will know .. the pockets are important and does not interfiere with the hip belt on any true mountain jacket ... please be careful on your comments :) .. no hard feelings please ..
