Could anyone answer this? How is the soundstage in comparason to the akg q701 to this?
HawaiiancervezaIf you imagine a circle ⭕️ fitting inside an ellipse, the PC37X has only slightly less deep frontal projection but a consistent distance all around, while the Q701 ellipse is wider at the sides. A better DAC and Amp helps the Q701 to have a rounder soundstage, and also reveal more layers separating the depth of distances than the PC37X. All my previous responses to you about why I ultimately preferred the PC37X still stand. Best soundstage improvements come from surround processing, and the quality of that processing, the DAC, and the amp. On a budget, the Sennheiser GSX 1000 has been amazing! I’ve had good results with Creative for a really long time as well, and their new Super X-Fi looks interesting (but I haven’t tried it) because it is supposed to use smartphone photos of your ear to tailor the surround realism to you. The BEST surround experience (HALLELUJAH!) moment I ever had was with the Smyth A16 Realizer: for the three demos I had, you sit in a room with a 7.1.4 speaker setup, mics in your ears, and Stax L300 or Sennheiser HD 800 headphones. The Stax are super detailed, but I don’t think most people would say they have the most expansive soundstage and “out of your head” feeling... but good processing makes the biggest difference. With the A16 Realizer processor, first they measure what your face and ears do to the sound from each speaker by the time it reaches your ear canal, then they measure and EQ the headphones... and then the headphones sound almost EXACTLY like the speakers! It also has a headtracker, so the virtual speakers “stay in place” when you turn your head a bit, and they set it up to switch the speakers back on when you took the headphones off so you could compare instantly. I’m not exaggerating when I say I had to ask my friend behind me if the speakers were actually turning off when I put the headphones on... it was like magic. I signed up for it on Kickstarter, day 1, for about $1k, but it won’t come out till this year (hopefully) and the retail price will be more like $4k. I am a soundstage junky, and binaural or surround processing has proven to be the best way to get there. But yeah, if you have the Q701, get a processor, if you don’t have a Q701, the “out of your head” experience will be better with this PC37X + a Surround DSP, than a Q701 by itself.

EvshrugOh thanks for the reply. I actually had asked this before I had asked you directly. But thanks for the info. Ive been considering an amp. I have the liquid carbon X sdac. I sit in front of a 55in tv though so an amp wouldnt be favorable. Im thinking of getting a monitor so I can get or use my current amp. I used to use the q701 but with the mix amp and antlion mic. Im enjoying the pc37x atm but still miss the larger sound stage the q701 gave. I really want to get my hands on th he hd800 S but that wont happen anytime soon especially with a new born. But anywho, thanks for the reply.

HawaiiancervezaI remembered replying to you before. Congrats on the newborn!! Man, I hear about the sleepless nights, loads of pride... does that require constant attention, or just a lot of availability? A bit off topic, I know.

EvshrugHaha you're fine. Thanks, it requires a lot of availibility and attention. Lots of sleepless nights haha. I think we're zombies at this point. But we do find a way to get through it. Lots of joy thiugh. =]
HawaiiancervezaI seem to see parents as the most sleepy yet mission-driven (and thus satisfied in their purpose, a kind of happiness even if they aren’t smiling at the moment) people. ... also the stony-faced moments where the baby is crying, maybe in public, and you can see their thoughts on their faces “We’re going to get through this, baby is fed, clean, so just needs to let out this energy and emotion so baby gets tired and goes to sleep.” 🤣👍 You go, parents! Personally, I have a 42” 720p TV. It’s 10 years old, can’t afford another right now because I want a down payment on a house and soon after we “settle” then “I” want a baby, but in the meantime this TV still works, and it’s an awesome late Pioneer/Panasonic tech Plasma TV that’s still really good even though I caught it on sale for $300 when I worked at Sears. However, I love my $120, 24” Asus monitor, it’s great when the wife wants to watch something, when I want a little “me time,” or I want to be a bit seriously competitive because there is no processing and no input lag. I love the image quality and color from the IPS panel, but seeing how I ended up using it more for gaming than graphic design and image editing, I would just get a VN panel for crisper motion and be done with it.
