mathiasnThere have been more big hype highly desirable keyboards offerings in the last 30 days than in the previous 6 months combined. My guess is with all of those and carbon dropping today, many people's wallets couldn't handle it and they decided to skip on yuri even though they may still want it. So yeah, I'm not surprised to see requests immediately after the drop ends.

ChitownM2Yeap, the stream has been ... overwhelming to say the least. I was just looking at Carbon pricing and it's going to be distasteful for some folks. Many will regret missing out on Yuri.

OracleKevI guess I don't think the pricing is that bad if you look at the higher MOQ numbers. I think more than half the kits are going to hit the highest tier and lowest pricing.

ChitownM2I'm doing calculations based on the lowest price tier. TKL. Alpha, Modifiers: 35.99 + 44.99 = 80.98 (lowest price tier) Winkeyless TKL (layout above the pricing table). I need Alphas, Modifiers, Modifiers Extension, 7u Spacebar: 35.99 + 44.99 + 49.99 + 29.99 + 8.99 = 139.96 (again lowest price tiers). Price jumped whopping 58.98 or 42% for 5 keys Same situation for many 60% layouts. If I go to 1800 layout, it's 169.95. I haven't added options yet.

OracleKevThat has to do with the layout and formation of the sets which was entirely up to Tomb3ry and had nothing to do with MD. Tomb3ry had an IC thread on geekhack for the last 3 months taking input on what should be in each kit. There were tons of suggestions from people asking to add a specific key they needed to a kit, but I actually didn't see a single one where someone suggested he remove some rarely used keys. Adding on keys to each set helps each one make MOQ but increases the price at the same time so it is a double edged sword.

ChitownM2That doesn't make sense to me because SP MoQ is low and this set is high volume, so even if you divide it up, there will be no problem meeting MoQ and getting to discounted tier. My gut is it wasn't entirely up to Tomb3ry. If he made that call, well it's his mistake. I'm actually little pissed at MD for bringing this drop in this form. They should have significant pull at both designer and SP.

OracleKevWell I followed the GH thread pretty closely and Tomb3ry certianly made it sound like he had free reign on assembling the kits. He doesn't have control over the pricing of each kit, my guess is MD sets that based upon SP's price + Tomb3ry's % + MD profit + overhead costs.
Edit: The one thing I don't know about is maybe MD put a limit on how many kits they wanted to sell. There are really a ridiculous amount of kits already in this drop and breaking them up into more smaller kits might have been something MD didn't want to tackle.
The thing I am most upset by is MD's decision to drop everything so close to eachother. /dev/tty finished up less than 30 days ago and since then we've had K-type, yuri, infinity ergodox, miami dolch and this all on MD. Not to mention GMK oblivion and a couple of other popular buys within the community. There has honestly been more big hype high demand drops in the last 30 days than there has been in the previous 6 months.

ChitownM2If that is the case, it's Tomb3ry's loss since he could have done better by breaking up some sets, thus making them more reachable. Maybe this should be discussed at GH and feedback shared with MD. Skimming through GH discussion, it's way too much design oriented and it's pretty much rubber stamp. Too much commercialism will turn people off and kill what we got. Pacing is problematic as well.

OracleKevYes I think Tomb3ry skewed towards bundling things into kits to make sure that they got produced. The same happened with the Int'l kit on Yuri. He packed so much into it to try and force all international buyers to support 1 kit that it ended up being so expensive that it probably lost a lot of buyers.
SP is different though since they have much lower MOQ numbers....

ChitownM2 "/dev/tty finished up less than 30 days ago and since then we've had K-type, yuri, infinity ergodox, miami dolch and this"
Nautilus GKM comes straight after Carbon, maybe even will overlap. The probably Laser GMK. The Kira keyboard is still on the horizon as well and there are a few other very cool looking sets at the IC stage also on GH. Yuri has done fantastically well considering, we can only guess how many kits might've sold had it dropped in a bit more isolated from the other high profile keysets.
OracNautilus won't overlap with Carbon.
