Only a noob would use these to light a pipe! Anyone who's ever smoked an actual tobacco pipe, that actually contained pipe tobacco would know better! Real pipe smokers only use wooden matches--or if desperate, butane. These are cigarette lighters, plain and simple, and they've been cigarette lighters since your G-G-Great Grandpa used one the beaches of Normandy. MD calls 'em pipe lighters 'cause A) you're too young to know different and B) so their contribution to your premature exit due to lung cancer won't be so damn obvious. Trust me--if you're putting anything in your mouth that need to be lit (or set on fire), you're on the wrong side of this drop.

RayFSide-bored Zippos are, and are intended to be, pipe lighters. Massdrop markets them as pipe lighters because Zippo markets them as pipe lighters. Pipe smokers use them for... wait for it... lighting pipes. Matches and butane simply aren't worth a darn outdoors. The Zippo is exceptionally wind-resistant. Naphtha does impart a little flavour, and it's worse if the lighter is overfilled. Burning the lighter for a few seconds prior to applying flame to the pipe helps. Using high quality naphtha helps (Zippo's black containers work well). At the end of the day, a little odd flavour when lighting is acceptable - for most people - if they're smoking a pipe anywhere breezy.

RayFBeat me to the punch. Exactly. Wooden match for a pipe or cigar, otherwise you spoil the flavor.
