Is this kit any good? I have heard recommendations for the Hakko FX-888D but not on this one. What would be the differences? Size?

Wampa101Definitely size and portability so it really depends on your needs. I've got the iron from Seeed and it really helps out with odd jobs here and there, but I've also got a Hakko which is more of a permanent fixture in my garage.
Hakko is also a familiar name in the industry. Here you get a kit, but with the mentioned Hakko, you're getting a full work station. Also, let's not forget how much more easier it is to find a source for replacement parts when it comes to known brands. So pick your poison.

Wampa101Portability is this iron's strength and weakness. The light iron can get dragged around by the cord easily. If you're outfitting a fixed soldering workstation, a desk-based iron with a nice heavy stand may be a better fit. In terms of actual soldering, this works about as well as my Hakko or Weller, it has very good tip temperature regulation, as good as top-end desk models. (Assuming the power supply is up to snuff, that is.)
