There are 2 different connection schema for TRRS.
OMTP TRRS Left Right Mic Ground (should have black insulation rings)
CTIA/AHJ Left Right Ground Mic (should have White insulation rings)
Most companies initially went with OMTP and Apple went with CTIA, However some companies switched to CTIA and the insulation colour is not necessarily adhered too. It's all a dogs breakfast now.
Which one is this OMTP or CTIA/AHJ?
In addition to my original comment, there is an OMTP/CTIA converter available from Cable Chick.
It just swaps the mic & ground connections, so whichever one you have, it converts to the other standard.
Also in 3.5mm dia, if you just have a 15mm long TRS headphone, that can plug straight into a 15mm TRRS. The sleave simply shorts out the mic function while in use. This seems to work just fine with everything including Mac. There is a 17mm long TRRS on some devices which is not compatible with 15mm long TRS or TRRS. WHATAMESS!

Anybody using this with their iPhone? I have an iPhone 12 and am wondering if it will allow me to use my Sennheiser headset for discord with the apple headphone adapter.
Would the microphone component work in a Drop THX 789 headphone amp on Windows if I'm plugging this into the 3.5mm input? I'm not sure if these single combo jacks on gaming controllers or laptops are specially designed to support both or not. I'd never heard of being able to use my amp for microphone input.
Although not listed as compatible , I assume this is what is needed to work with my newly ordered PC38X to work on my Macbook Pro? I was pretty disappointed that there was no mention of needing anything additional to work and it seems like both cables included would not work as one is a two part and the other seems to have a different TRRR than is expected by the port on the Mac as the mic is not recognized and I only get faint audio from a single ear despite trying the midi settings for audio device etc that people recommend.
I thought so. The cool thing about the 38X is that it comes with 2 wires. One that has a splitter for mic and audio and the other wire is just one input for both audio and mic. So it covers both where the 37X only came with the one wire that has the mic and audio splitter. You should be covered with the one that does both but it is a considerably shorter wire than the one with the split.
I got both the PCV 07, and PCV 05. Although it looks like I could've gotten away with an OMTP to CTIA adapter that switches the mic, and ground lines.
