I’m retired now, but am a third generation locksmith. My grandfather opened the family business in 1904. My father ran the business until 1971, when he retired. I started officially as an employee in 1963, and, along with four partners, bought the business from my dad in 1971. I retired in at the end of 2008. The business was purchased by the employees, as my four original partners were all retired by then. I have always looked for a set of lock picks that are the size of a regular pen and made with the high quality I desire. Your Pocket Pen Pick Set meets every one of my wishes. Thank you for a fine product from one who has used lock picks his entire life.
Very nice little kit, just like other SouthOrd products. It's a pretty cramped trying to fit everything in but it CAN be done, though you'll probably just end up getting rid of the picks you don't use anyway which leaves you with plenty of space to fit everything in. Only gripe is you're stuck with just one tension wrench which serves as the pen's pocket clip, but that's not a huge issue.
I really like this set because of how little space it takes up. The picks are very high quality, tempered stainless steel with a buttery smooth finish, all around. No sharp edges to catch where they shouldn't.
I saw some other reviews complaining about only one tension tool can be carried as a clip. Actually, you can piggyback another on top of the first one and carry two of your choice out of the set of four. See my photo for reference.
Definitely a novelty piece but one that works ! I'm not a big into the hobby but I find myself looking at new picks and different sets all the time, I never wanted to get a large bulky set that made it look like I was learning to do something nefarious so when I found this on Drop I thought that looks sleek and it has a bunch of picks !
Cool design. The picks are nice and thin and design works well. Only issues are that not all picks fit inside the tube and you will have to pick which picks and tension rod you want to carry with you.
The number of picks and levers that came with this are insane - I wasn't able to put them all back in once I pulled them out to catalog them. I had to layer and have them back-and-forth (facing up and down, staggered) to allow them to sandwich in the handle cavity.
You can only have one (well, two if you have them on each side) levers, so you need to choose the one that is most comfortable for you to work with.
When the pick is in the holder, the handle is HUGE in comparison - this can be nice as far as lever-and-fulcrum concept for movements to be very, very slight inside the lock, but takes a bit of getting used to when you are used to the light, slim leather case picks.
Overall, good quality and construction for what it is - I feel it was worthwhile for the price.
I wanted to like these based on the brand, but was disappointed. I find myself reverting back to some cheap Chinese ones I got off a Chinese site. The Chinese ones costed about half as much, and don't warp/bend as much as these do.
chibiThey don't come in a nice package like this, but I got mine on Bangood. I have tried some random sets, but still go back to them for playing around. They are not perfect. You will have to probably touch them up with some light sanding. I like to give locks more abuse than needed probably, but to each their own. Even LockPickingLawyer (if you are a YouTube lock picking channel fan) gave the basic Bangood set an OK rating, but says the advanced set isn't worth it. One set I use is the ones from "DANIU"...even comes with one of those high quality (lol) transparent locks. It's currently on sale for $7.
Are they the best? No. I still use some high quality tension bars from known companies that are expensive. One of the main draw backs I had with this set is the tension bars provided. I hated them, and bent some of the picks easier than expected.
After already owning the 8 piece Southord pick set that comes in the leather case, I'm having a hard time really loving this set. I guess I expected this to be edc friendlier than the other, but it really isn't IMHO. In the end, I don't think it's smaller. It seems heavier, although I haven't verified this yet. And it's a bit fiddly to set up and put back away.
Quality is great and it doesn't scream "I'm a lock pick!" I have carried these in my carry-on aboard 15-20 flights so far and never been hassled or questioned by TSA about them. As others have mentioned it is a bit tricky to get them all stashed in the handle, but it's doable, if a bit tight. Very happy with this product!
