Does the hole in the blade serve any other purpose than making it lighter?

DELOThe hole in the blade is so you can open the knife one handed, and is spyderco's trademark. It works instead of thumb studs.

TallNHairyDaveSo this would be considered to be one handed and with a locking mechanism?
Darn, looks like i won't be able to get this shipped to germany :/

BborokeeNo, no locking mechanism. It's a very clever slip joint and the blade is readily foldable at all times. It does NOT lock so you should be fine for Germany I would have thought.

TallNHairyDaveAha! Thanks for the super clarification! The knife laws aren't really explained very well with examples so that i can't gauge what i can or can't buy, especially with online orders...
Alright, does this mean that i could probably order other knives from spyderco on massdrop as well?
Sorry for the barrage of questions!

BborokeeYou'd certainly be OK with the following spyderco models "dogtag", the "UKPK", the "Pingo", the "roadie" and the "SpyDK" as none of them lock open. The other folding knives in spyderco's range do lock open and they're ALL one hand openers.
Spyderco also do some nice fixed blades too

BborokeeThere's also a few other non locking knives in spyderco's lineup that I had forgotten about. Models to look out for are the "bug", "honeybee" and "grasshopper", the "Squeak" and the "Urban" and the "clipitool". There was also a stainless steel only version of the Kiwi, but that's discontinued.
