As someone new to building custom keyboards I really had no idea what kind of switches I would like. This switch tester is great to test out exactly what kind of switches you would want for a particular build and see/feel/hear the differences between type and manufacturer. You can read and listen to videos but will never really know how a switch feels until you press it yourself. I was surprised how much I preferred the linear switches in this tester.
+Minimal design, keeps focus on switches.
+Great way to test and find your preferred switches.
-Missing information sheet about the switches and where they're located (I know they can be found on the product page but It's a nice to have one with the switches).
Would love some engraved info about the caps for quicker identification or sticker on backside.
Being new in the keeb culture, I watched youtube videos and tutorials about mechanical keyboards. I needed something tangible to see whether I preferred switches that were "clicky," "linear," or "tactile." Buying this tester helped me discover that I enjoy the sound and feel of "clicky" switches.
I wish the tester had included a picture/handout with the name of the switches. Maybe the keycaps could have writing on them? It's good to note that this is the cheapest option on drop.com.
Overall, it is a good product if you want to know and feel the different types of switches.
When I bought this I was very new to the hobby and unsure of my switch preferences. While this isn’t going to be the be all end all of switch testing, it provides an excellent first step into deciding what sorts of switch you like.
If you are new to this hobby this is a great tool for learning the basics of the most known switches and what you like. It definitely helped me decide what to get for my first build. Prior to this I could only test the prebuilt keyboards we had in the house.
